Should you care, I, being incredibly bored at work on occasion, have managed to re-pad my folder of webcomic bookmarks. Besides hilarity (which I am always open to) I'm partial to fantasy/adventure comics with intriguing plotlines and exceptional art. Here are some new and some not-so-new-but-well-worth-mentioning titles I've dug up.
I think
Gunnerkrigg Court is one of the best comics out there on the web, and that's quite a statement to make. It's different (visually and conceptually), creative, widely appealing, satisfying for both short and long term readership, and often just plain fun. It's a comic for grown-up kids, whatever your age. It follows the many adventures of Antimony Carver, a grade school girl with an uncanny knack for getting involved in the business of spirits.
I'm always trying to get people to read
Sam and Fuzzy, possibly my favorite webcomic. Off the wall humor and mind-bending plot twists galore! Not many comics can tug at your heartstrings and have you in stitches in a matter of panels. Which leads me to conclude that Sam Logan's a mind as sharp and twisted as a corkscrew...
The Phoenix Requiem, is a "Victorian Era" fiction/fantasy with beautifully painted pages and an almost obnoxiously dreamy male lead. Because if men were actually that charming, women would never get anything done. We'd just spend all day swooning. SWOONING.
I was introduced to
Roza a while ago. It's a whimsical, fairytale like story following the adventures of Roza, a "firy" young heroine and her always goofy, often resourceful sidekick Nic. Gorgeous storybook artwork.
I was initially skeptical of
Xylia because I break out in a rash if I come in contact with anything too "girly." And purple haired fairies and their lovers traveling through time and space to save the world with the power of their undying love is just the sort of rot to send me running the other direction. But, lo, it is a skillfully executed comic with solid pacing and characters that pull you right in. Also there's a magical talking corgi that can grow to the size of an ox.
I've been following
Level for years now. I started into it because it was just sort of fun and easy to read. And then at some point the world, cyber-punk with Evangelion overtones, really grabbed me and I've been intrigued ever since.
I think cute and deadly is, quite a frankly, overdone in anime/manga inspired webcomics. So
Strays is an exceptional comic to be cute and deadly in all the ways you'd expect while still maintaining my interest. The art is fantastic. The action is completely readable, as are the expressions - not an easy accomplishment. And it's hilarious to boot!
The Dreamer is a story of a modern day teen's adventures with a handsome Revolution era soldier every time she falls asleep. She begins to wonder how innocent these dreams really are when they begin to affect her waking life. Cute, well written, and with an eye for historical accuracy. I'm really curious to see where this series goes.
And then of course there's
Dr. McNinja, which really can't be described and must be experienced. But I think the name says it all. Dr. McNinja. WTF.
