today was the day that joseph andrew stack posted a suicide note online, proceeded to burn down his own house, then drove to the georgetown airport and flew his private plane into the IRS building here in austin. this was presumably his way of protesting what mr. stack felt was unfair treatment at the hands of the IRS ( Read more... )

I think there's been an undercurrent of conservative/hyper-libertarian/wingnut thought much longer than last November, though Obama's election seems to have stepped it up. These were the folks who were 911-truthers, and who could tell you about conspiracies surrounding deaths of supposed enemies of the Clinton administration. I messaged my sister "Orange you glad Dad doesn't have access to a plane?" when I found out.
Someone I know pointed out that in the late 90s/early 2000s when there was a wave of anti-globalization protests worldwide, everybody involved felt like things had gotten to a point where revolution just had to be right around the corner, and this is like that, except this crew of muttering anti-government types is way richer and way more into guns.

ok - A) WTF? I leave the interwebs for 2 days and had no idea this even happened.
