Monthly Dinner in Friends

The first time Mark Sloane kissed Addison Montgomery-Sheppard, she was so surprised she didn’t do or say anything in return.

It had been during one of their Monthly Dinner in Friends. Every third Tuesday of the month, the two of them, along with Derek, and once in a while a potential-could-maybe-become-a-girlfriend for Mark, would all cook together and take a night off from work to let some steam off. They had come up with this system during their first year as interns, because they thought they’d go crazy. They always had trouble finding a date where the three of them could all have dinner, though, because of their crazy schedule. So after three months of having to delay their dinner during their second year as residents, Mark had decided to make it on the third Tuesday of every month. No matter what, they had to take the night off on this date, because having fun with friends around a good meal was way more important than working senseless until exhaustion. Although Derek and Addison had found this choice of date a little odd (Third Tuesday of every month? Really?), they happily obliged, because they were really exhausted (why exactly had they chosen that job? Were they stupid or what?).

So it became their little tradition. Over the years, things had slightly changed (Derek and Addison fell in love, then moved in together, then got married, while Mark had more potentiel-could-maybe-almost-become girlfriends than he could probably handle, which gave him a hell of a reputation), but they kept their Monthly Dinner in Friends.

Only, over the years, they had all become some kind of legends in their own fields. Derek one of of the most talked about brain surgeons on the east coast. Any pregnant woman in New York and any state around would come rushing to get a consult from Addison. As for Mark, people from all around the country would come to his “magic hands” to get plastic surgery.

It became more and more difficult to find some time for their Monthly Dinner in Friends, but they always managed. Well... Mark and Addison always managed. Derek had more trouble. He had missed four dinners in a row. Addison started to get frustrated at him. They even started fighting, which they had never done in ten years of marriage. So after a long fight in which a lot of yelling had happened and a lot of really mean things had been said, Dered promised he would be there next Tuesday.

-And all of the other third Tuesday of the month after?
-And all of the other third Tuesday of the month after, Derek had answered, exhausted.

Despite the fact that they stayed very polite towards each other in public, Mark realised something was going on between his friends. In fact, it’s exactly because of that that he realised something was wrong. They were way too cordial, too cold with each other. He tried talking about it with Derek, but...

-Hey man. What’s going on between you and Ad...
-Look, Mark, now’s not the time, I have a surgery.

And he ran off.

Later that day, Mark found Addison eating alone at the cafeteria. She looked really sad and tired.

-Hey, doll face, he said as he sat in front of her.
-Hi Mark.

She gave him a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.

-Why so sad?
-I had a lunch date with Derek. But he blew me off for a surgery. Again.
-You know how it is, Addie. He cannot...
-I know, but for once in a while, I would like MY brain to be in his priorities, you know? I’m his WIFE, Mark, his wife, and he cannot even find time for so much as kissing me anymore! I have a career too, and patients, and a reputation, but I still find time for him, and you, and our dinner, and everything! And so can you! So why not him? It’s not THAT hard...
-I know. I know, Addie.

He put his hand over hers on the table in an attempt to confort her. He had not exactly expected the sparks that ran through his body at the contact.

When Mark put his his hand on hers, Addison raised her head and locked her eyes with his. Then, she smiled. A real, genuine smile.

-Thanks, Mark. I...

Beep! Beep!

-I guess I have to go, she said while looking at her pager.

She took her hand from under Mark’s and stood up.

-Thanks again. See you Tuesday!

While she walked towards her patient, Addison wondered why she felt a weird sentation where Mark’s hand hadd been, as if all she wanted was to get that touch again.

Sitting at the cafeteria table, Mark wondered the same thing.

The two of them didn’t have a chance to see each other until next Tuesday, when Mark arrived at the Sheppard’s house for the Monthly Dinner in Friends. Addison was cooking while Derek was pouring wine. They all sat down and started eating, the three of them together for the first time in five months. Addison was ecstatic, which made Mark happy (Woah! Since when seeing Addison happy made him happy?). As for Derek, he seemed like all he wanted was to be back at the hospital. Fortunately, Addison didn’t seem to notice.

They were in the middle of their lasagnas when Derek’s pager went off.

-Derek, if you touch that... Addison started, but Derek cut her off.
-Look, Addison, it could be important!

He stood up and went for the pager.

-Derek, please. It’s our Monthly Dinner...
-I have to go.
-What? No! It’s your night off!
-I know, but...
-I cannot believe you! You promised!
-I know, Addison. And I’m here. But now I have to go.
-Ok, fine, leave! Like you always do!
-You think I like that? You think I like being away from you all the time? And from Mark? And everyone I love?
-Well it sure looks like it!
-Then maybe you’re just stupid.

And he left.

Mark felt very unconfortable sitting there, with lasagnas in his mouth. Of course, he knew Derek and Addison fought, but he had never been a witness to one of those fights, and he had never wanted to be one.

He thought about making a silent exit, thinking Addison probably wanted to be alone right now, but when he actually looked at her, he changed his mind.

Addison looked devastated and she was on the verge of tears. One look at her and all Mark wanted to do was to hold her in his arms and shield her from all the pain in the world. So it’s actually what he did - the “holding her in his arms” part, not the “shielding her from all the pain in the world” part, because he wasn’t able to do so.

Once she felt Mark’s strong arms around her, Addison let go. She cried for what seemed like hours. Then, she started laughing in the crook of Mark’s neck.

-What’s going on?
-I just... it’s so... I feel so stupid.
-Why?

He lessened his hold on her and looked in her eyes. Somehow, despite the teared cheek and red eyes, he thought she never looked prettier.

-It’s just... I’m not supposed to cry about my husband in his best friend’s arm.
-So that’s all I am? Your husband’s best friend?

He took a playful tone, pretending to be hurt. It made her laugh. (God, she’s so gorgeous when she laughs.)

-You know you’re not. You’re way more than that.
-Really?
-Yeah. You’re my best friend too. The only one that’s always there for me. More than Derek himself...

Addison lowered her head, about to burst into tears again.

-Hey, Mark said, taking her chin between his fingers and forcing to look into his eyes again. Don’t cry again, please. I don’t know how to handle crying girls. Screaming girls, moaning girls, okay, but crying girls? Not my expertise.

This made Addison laugh again, and this time, Mark couldn’t help herself: he lowered his head and brought their lips together.

It was short, only a peck, but there was so much electricity that shot through Mark’s that he pulled away. And regretted it immediatly, already missing the contact.

He looked at Addison. She stood there, frozen in place, her eyes wide open and her mouth still in kissing position.

-Ok... so... I’ll just... I think I’ll just go.

Addison didn’t move. At all. So Mark took his coat and just left, missing her contact more than ever and just wishing he could go back inside and kiss her again. And again. And again.

Inside, once Addison recevered from the shock of having her best friend’s lips on hers, she wished the same thing.

The End
