So my dad and I went to see Harry Potter last night at the theater in Pullman. It's a cute cinema--the seats could be a little more comfortable, but I like that the armrests can be put away. Anyways, I definitely liked this movie. The pace was perfect--yes, they probably skipped out on schoolyard storylines, and I worry a bit that they may have skimmed over potentially important details (like maybe Sirius' brother's name and connection within the Death Eaters? Mundungus Flich anyone? Then again, Rowlings has final say in the movies too, so I suppose cut details AREN'T that important)-- but honestly it's 1000x better to watch than to read the whole book again. I HATED reading the book because Harry was just a petulant testosterone-ridden angsty boy with a yelling problem. In fact, to catch up before re-reading Book 6 to prep for Book 7 (W00T!) I read just the beginning and ending 3 chapters because I couldn't stand to deal with all the yelling again. Radcliffe did a fantastic job keeping Harry's rage palpably smoldering instead.

Hell, ALL the actors--especially the adults-- were perfectly in character. Holy shit, the woman playing Umbridge was fantastic! I wonder if there's just a strong culture on the set for the adult actors to bring their A game. Like, the casting director was spot-on in the first film, and everybody who is brought in for the adult roles knows that the critics are expecting the best from them. And I'm not talking about reading lines--I mean the little face twitches and perfect subtle reactions during scenes. Watch Gary Oldman (Sirius) talking to Harry or Dumbledore or Umbridge going through thinking processes.

I also really appreciated the movie making a way bigger deal (and making it obvious) when Voldemort was trying to control Harry's mind and the mental battle to defeat him. All in all, the movie makes Harry look a lot more intelligent than in the book--he at least figures some things out on his own instead of Dumbledore having to tell him everything. Therefore, my hearty recommendation to go see it. ^_^
