trying to figure out what I'm doing with my life (again). had a long but fruitful talk with adviser yesterday, at the end of which I decided that I won't go straight to a PhD program after finishing my MS next May. I don't feel ready right now: my research just started, I just formed my committee, yadda yadda. on the other hand, if I apply next

I was thinkin' about applying to Yale for my PhD, but I guess that won't happen till next year. though, after meeting with my program director / cohort-mates, I am kinda rethinking my decision...

I think you should look at the rest of US / east coast and beyond. It's just a year: what about crazy places like Europe / Asia?

yeah, ugh. I wish I weren't tied to California / the US. I guess I'm not really tied -- my dad's fine with whatever I do; he's awfully supportive! but I dunno, my dad's brother (whom my dad looks up to, and whom I also respect a lot) has been asking me what I'm going to do, when I'm going to start helping out my dad, etc. so there's that pressure. also I feel a bit guilty about running off all the time doing exciting stuff when my little brother needs a surrogate mom / big sister to help him grow up :(

so yeah. I felt stupid explaining my feelings of familial obligation to my adviser the other day! but there it is. if it were totally up to me, though, I'd definitely look into Germany / Belgium for paleontology and Africa for ecology. damn.
