Of all sectors Gem's Tron needed information from, the Portal was certainly among the more urgent. And yet Yori had delayed unconscionably long--telling herself first that she was waiting for the security programs to complete their business, then for the Arena hallways to clear, then for other possible business Tron might have, and finally had to admit that she had no excuse ( ... )

Hearing Yori's voice, Tron looked up from the myriad of reports and new data that he'd collected over the past microcycle. "Of course, Yori. Please, come in."

The Portal was one of his main concerns, right now, and he welcomed Yori's input on all of the developments there. Aside from that, too, it was good to see the program, even though he knew she wasn't his Yori. He hadn't spent enough time with her, like many other programs in the system, and welcomed the chance to speak with her now.

Unlike the rest of the Arena, Tron's office felt entirely safe to Yori. Which made perfect sense, because Tron was in it.

Gem's Tron looked so overworked, buried in reports already, that Yori clamped her teeth on the instinctive urge to order him to go recharge at once. Not her place.

She made quick substitutions until what came out was an acceptable, "Looks like you could use more staff up here." Yori nodded at the reports, with a concerned glance. "You never liked--he, he never liked sitting still that long. Why don't I recommend a few programs to Gem?" Who would do a much better job of getting them in place than Tron was likely to, Yori suspected.

Tron stood from the desk, shoving the datapad to the side. "No, you're right. I don't like just sitting up here... it's not what I was written to do. But it's part of what I have to do, now." There was much he'd taken on that he hadn't expected, once he took control of the Arena, and consequently became the de facto admin of the system.

"I do have help, though. Ram has been assisting me, and others. But if you know of anyone else, programs who could be trusted... yes, I would appreciate it."

Moving around to sit on the edge of the desk, he gestured for her to come further into the room. "How are you holding up? The portal... it must be very confusing right now."

He didn't have near enough help, if he looked like this. Then again, much of the fatigue was certainly due to the continuing Rinzler issue.

Yori held out a datachip. "The full report." She'd encrypted it several different ways, and now rattled off the key to the more eccentric layer for Tron's use only. If anyone tried to take advantage of the Portal programs' vulnerabilities, again, because of her...

No, she didn't have to think about that. Tron wouldn't let it happen.

She grimaced slightly. "To summarize, though--yes, it's very confused, both the Portal itself and all the conversion processes. Fortunately for everyone, the programs who are sane have some control. A few weren't too badly reprogrammed, and a few more have managed to recover. But the ones who are damaged or reprogrammed are...very damaged." Yori shuddered.

Her visit home had been a sharp lesson in what Clu had done to gain control when he didn't manage to break the programs involved so easily as he'd broken Yori. It was worse ( ... )

Tron's expression turned more serious as Yori made her report. He hadn't realized the extent of the instability of the Portal, nor how much strain it was putting on her and the other programs who helped to monitor it. "Is there anything that can be done to help make the Portal more... stable?" he asked, though he was already certain of the answer.

"As far as the programs, with time, I hope more of us will be closer to rational." Yori smiled, a sad expression. "Emara's good at that. And there's a version of Dumont helping, who came to the Grid, which mine never did--he sent his greetings. Eventually I hope things will be controlled enough to let programs here know when and where to expect new arrivals."

She grimaced. "But the Portal itself...we don't understand where it's pulling energy from, we don't understand how it's getting its data. Interfering with it, even if we found a way to try, is possibly more of a risk than leaving it alone. And at least it's giving back some of the programs the Grid lost." Yori sighed. Surely Tron would understand. "It may be selfish of me, but I don't want to risk ending that."

"Dumont? Give him my greetings as well. I will make time to go see him in person." Tron guessed that the older guardian would not be the one he'd known, but still, it would be good to see him.

"It would be helpful to know where to expect new arrivals," he agreed. "Disorientation is too common, especially for those who have never been in a Grid like this before. Not to mention the Users..." Flynn was the only User he'd known who hadn't been unnerved by the new world. Having someone there to help them would be better.

"No... you're right. We shouldn't risk anything happening to the Portal." Not yet, anyway. If the hostile programs kept coming through, however, he had to find a way to limit it.

"I was delighted to see him again. You'd be very welcome." Yori smiled sadly. "I never thought we'd see a time we could look back and call those millicycles simple." Mass imprisonments, derezzings, interrogation and coercion, a User interfering in person, breaking all the rules to reach the MCP's domain...believing Tron had been deleted. And then the chaos of victory and rebuilding, without even knowing for certain whether Flynn had survived.

She watched the flickers of strain in Tron's expression. They were familiar enough that Yori felt confident inferring, "You hate that you can't secure that entryway. Goes against all your instincts to leave something so massive undefended." A system that couldn't be closed at need couldn't be properly protected. Tron was designed for security, not the compromises of sysadmin.

"If it makes you feel any better, they are running all the usual tests for unstable code and possible infection." Yori sighed, guilt leaping up. "Only they can't--yet--always identify reprogramming as a threat ( ... )
