Hmm. How many years have I been bitching about DRM-less/free music from the industry? I wasn't wrong in saying that the mainstream techy wouldn't go for the DRM-filled BS that iTunes offered, but nobody else seemed to notice. That's a good thing though. They're doubling the bitrate, as well, from 128k to 256k. You're basically paying for bandwidth.

I don't think I've ever ripped/encoded a song at less than 320kbps. The best indication of what you should be doing in the industry comes from the people that are doing it for you: the rippers/pirates. I can say with certainity that it's 320kbps variable right now. Every release that's ever touched my systems (we're talking back in like 95-96, and yes, nobody knew what mp3s were) has been 128kbps or greater, and the groups have upped that to what it is now over the years. l3enc and Winplay3! O the memories.

I'm actually in the process of re-ripping all of my stuff to Apple Lossless for archival and home listening, then 256k AAC for the iPod.
