Canon: Delicious Gakuin, a place far from people, located deep in the mountains, is a cooking school built to create the best chefs in the world. For the three years from entering until graduation, leaving school grounds is forbidden. However, only those who can defeat the principal and staff in a cooking contest will be allowed to graduate early. The students, handpicked and kidnapped, undergo difficult, strict training methods and endure psychological borderline situations in order to become the world's elite - while details of the school itself are shrouded in mystery. Brought there against their will, nobody knows what destiny awaits our young protagonists: the self-proclaimed Delicious Five.
As founder of the Delicious Five and Second Year Representative of Delicious Gakuin, Nango Ryuuji fiercely follows his responsibilities and has a strong sense of duty. He is the self-proclaimed shooting star of Delicious Gakuin and heir to a major chain of yakiniku restaurants - but most importantly, he is a deafeningly loud, passionate geek. He is practically blind and will walk straight into walls without his thick glasses, but he is graced with exceptional hearing abilities. No matter what you may think about his nerdy demeanor and getup, you do not whisper about it behind his back. Nango certainly is a weirdo, but his heart is in the right place; with his adolescent sympathy, he grows very caring of his younger teammates. As far as cooking is concerned, he supplies as much important trivia as one would expect from a nerd, but his skills live up to his confidence; with his two iron spatulas Enron 1 and 2, he is a passionate griddle genius. Nango claims to be able to hear the angel of the flame whispering to him, which makes him the academy's chef with the best timing. His drive to defeat the school's staff and graduate early stems from his crush on Sanjou Ageha, an ethnic food expert from Delicious Gakuin's girls branch. Surpassing her as a chef is the only way to gain her interest and he has sworn to do it properly.
