I think you made a good point about leading these girls on - that IS a crappy thing to do. But, at the same time, you never had any intention of taking advantage of these girls. You wanted to help them, and move on. It's not like you were using them.
Also, finding girlfriends among your friends is not a bad idea. Some people do not look for the same things in their friends as they do in their significant others, but most successful relationships are based in friendship. When you get married, you'll want your wife to be your best friend. I know you're not looking for that now, but why not practice for it? Also, if it really is a good friendship, a try at a relationship won't ruin that. It's worth a shot.
