Okay, I have to ask. anonymous December 17 2011, 02:39:09 UTC
WHAT is with the sudden influx of people calling Monroe "Eddie" on the prompts?? This feels like a silly thing to be bothered by, but it is REALLY bothering me. Like, look, do what you want for your fills, I can't stop you, but come on, at least when you're doing the PROMPTS can you at least call him by his real name? (Not that I know why it bothers people that Monroe is officially his name, since it's always BEEN his only name on the show, but whatever.)

Again, I feel kind of ridiculous getting all up in arms about this, but for some reason it's really grinding my gears. I thought it was over for a while, then BAM, it's all over the last two pages or so. Sigh sigh sigh.

Eh, it's kind of fanon by now that his name is Eddie. No, it isn't official, and yes, it might change, but as a writer, I have to say it's really hard to write slash as most significant others don't refer to their partners by their last name only!

Lol go look at Inception fandom, it does it just fine. Especially as in this case we can assume Monroe WANTS to be called Monroe, even by Nick. I agree with the OP, it bothers me a lot.

...what exactly makes not having a first name harder to write slash? A name is a name. Nick calls him Monroe. Hap called him Monroe. He only introduces himself as Monroe. I think he would be fine called Monroe in bed.

OP here, and I totally agree with the two before me, and also want to add that it IS entirely possibly that Monroe is his first name! It's a first name as well as a last name. If you have a problem with the last names, why not just pretend it's his first?

Well, with Eddie prompts it gives you the choice whether to call him Eddie or Monroe. I don't think people mind either way which name you choose.

I personally use the name Monroe with Eddie prompts, but since I don't think Eddie would be contradicted in canon (everyone involved in the show seems adamant that they're only using his last name) I don't really mind Eddie stories/prompts. But keep using Monroe in prompts/fic if you prefer it; that's pretty much the only thing you can do.

NA

I mind. I will think twice about reading a fic if the author has used Eddie, tbh. Because to me it says that they don't care about the canon characterisation, and if they would rather call him a fanon name that caught on because they think its cute or whatever, then I have lower hopes for their fic in general.

OP here to say THIS THIS THIS! I know that for a while, it seemed possible that Eddie was part of his name, so it must suck if you really got used to that to have to change. But it seems kind of, idk, disrespectful to me to be kind of "*fingers in ears* LA LA LA LA" about canon completely disproving that. Which, again, I realize is a bit silly in a kink meme, but fic reads way truer to me when it's as close to canon as possible, and "Eddie" really throws me out of it.

This pretty much reflects my feelings about it, as do the other anon comments in this thread. If that's what people want to do fine (though admittedly I am also less likely to read/get into a fic if it uses Eddie), but it bothers the part of me that is pedantic about canon when people act like it's canon when, in the show at least, Monroe obviously wants to be called Monroe.

It seemed better for a bit, but yeah, there's been an influx of ~Eddie again.

Before reading a fill, I scan it for any Eddies. If I see one mention of that stupid fucking name, I just do not read it. I really do not understand why people are incapable of using the name he's given in the show. It's not that difficult.

Because Eddie is ~cuter!!! Because omg people HAVE to be called by a first name! Because lots of sites still use it because it was proliferated early before changes were made which means it must be right!!

This! I filled a prompt early on using Eddie before figuring out what the actual deal was...and then the find/replace took two seconds for the full version of the fic. I get that the first name fits the character, but SWM's interview seems to close the book on the issue--if nothing else, what happened to good, old-fashioned OCD?
