Reading

I have started reading That Hideous Strength by C. S. Lewis, but I don’t remember why. I have a bad habit of noting the name of a book that has been recommended by someone because it is interesting or relevant in some way to what I was reading. Unfortunately, I don’t write down who recommended it or in what way it is supposed to be interesting or ( Read more... )

I do the same thing. I have scraps of paper all over the place with names of books and authors. I can't remember if they were recommended by friends or if I read a review or what.

At least I'm not the only one. I keep promising to do better, but ....

Ha! You'll have to keep notes on your journal to keep track. :)

Good idea. And I have made a note (in my head this time) that you mentioned Keturah and Lord Death by Martine Leavitt (at least I think the note is right) which is next in my stack.

Yes, I did mention it, and I'm sure you will enjoy it. :)

You need LibraryThing!

It wasn't me who recommended it. I haven't read it in years. Did you read Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandra first. I have a vague memory that the three books are loosely connected and make That Hideous Strength a little easier to get through.

No, I haven't read the other two though they are in the same book. I'm finding That Hideous Strength interesting but don't know if I'll go back and read the others or not. Do you recommend them? See, if you do, I'll have a record.

And does Library Thing keep track of where recommendations come from?

I didn't like That Hideous Strength as much as the other two, but you have to bear in mind that I was fourteen. Who knows what I would like now?

I think with LibraryThing you can add notes and tags when you enter a book.

Are we on for tomorrow as usual?

It's been a very long time since I've read them, but the books do work as a trilogy. I think that the first and last are pretty accessible on their own, but Perelandra is somewhat dependant on Out of the Silent Planet. I'm not overly fond of Lewis, but when I saw "That Hideous Strength" in your journal, several scenes from the book popped into my mind -- from at least 20 years ago. Quite a testimony to his writing, or the buttons Lewis hit for me!

I'm about half way through. I don't think I'll read the first two right away ... a lot of other things in my stack but maybe eventually.
