Falling into consciousness Nick took a deep breath; and snuggled, his body blindly seeking the warmth of Gil. On autopilot, he slowly wrapped his arm around something soft. Dozing, he squeezed his arm, and it gave too much to be human. He really didn’t want to open his exhausted eyes, as he realized that he was squeezing one of the many pillows that Gil needed now to sleep comfortably with.

“Baby, where are you?” Nick sighed as he began searching the bed in earnest for the four months pregnant Gil. When he didn’t hear the other man’s breathing, he sat up abruptly, heart beating more rapidly. He looked around the pitch black room, trying to make his eyes adjust as quickly as possible. As he got out of the bed, he felt a small surge of panic when he didn’t hear any noise from their adjoining bathroom either.

Not bothering to put on any clothes, he left the room and began searching the hallway. Intellectually, he knew that if Gil had fallen, he would’ve made enough noise to alert him, especially if he needed help; but emotionally, he was panicking anyway.

Nick had just finished working a double, and then gone with Gil to the bi-weekly doctor’s appointment. They had all been pleasantly surprised that Gil had gotten through the first trimester with little more than morning sickness and some bloating. Because Gil was older and not in the best of physical shape to begin with, his OB warned him that he had to take care of himself, slow down, and keep his appointments; or be restricted to bed rest, possibly followed by hospitalization. Both Nick and the doctor knew that having Gil stay in bed would probably be worse than a set of newborn triplets. Everything with the baby checked out, and they went home with another ultrasound picture.

Yawning widely, Nick stopped at the top of the stairs and looked around. More alert, he proceeded down the stairs, systematically searching the various rooms. Was Gil folding clothes or pinning his latest African beetle in a display case? When Nick realized that the downstairs was empty, he peeked out of the front window to see both trucks still parked in the lot, and another jolt of panic went through his body.

“Gil? Honey, where are you?,” he called as he went to look in the back of the house. The gust of cool air made him shiver as he opened the door to the deck and looked around the large yard for his beloved. He could hear Gil’s voice in the back of his mind telling him to “shut the door or put some clothes on,” as he hurriedly shut and locked the door.

Fighting down another wave of panic, he deduced that Gil had to be in the house, and that maybe he’d fallen asleep somewhere other than their bedroom. He headed back upstairs, now wide awake and began to search again. After seeing that their library/gym was empty, he noticed that the next room’s door was shut.

Nick smiled to himself. Why hadn’t he thought of it immediately? He just knew that Gil was in the “nursery,” it contained the new recliner rocking chair and a few stuffed animals. Boxes of belongings to be redistributed around the house were also in the room. He put his ear to the door listening quietly; opening it when he heard a muffled noise.

Seeing Gil sitting on the floor in front of the recliner in his well worn green bathrobe, Nick was startled. As his eyes adjusted to the room’s light, his heart jumped to see Gil silently weeping amongst the boxes on the floor. When Nick composed himself, he went to him quickly.

“Gil, …Honey? Are ya’ hurt? …Did ya’ fall?” Gil shook his head “No,” but continued to cry. Nick sat behind him and pulled Gil’s back to his chest, wrapping his arms around his distraught lover and his now slightly protruding belly. He showered the salt and pepper curls with soft kisses, finding some tissues from a box on the floor. “It’s okay, Baby. Just keep cryin’, I’m right here with you.” Gil’s body shook with small sobs as Nick handed him a few tissues. Nick began to rock Gil in an effort to comfort him with silent support.

“I was on the way out of the bathroom, when I saw you sleeping so soundly in bed,” Gil suddenly whispered. “You looked like an angel, and I didn’t want to disturb you as I wasn’t ready to get back in bed.” Nick saw fresh tears begin to form.

“Shhhh, baby, you don’t have to explain. It’s gonna be okay,” Nick whispered gently as Gil blew his nose.

“I came in here, and suddenly the magnitude of having our baby hit me. What did I do to deserve your love enough to have our child? You could have anyone you want to be a parent with you. How could you trust me enough with this responsibility?” Gil took a breath and another small sob escaped, making Nick hug him more tightly. He noticed the most recent ultrasound picture on the floor next to them.

Nick sighed with relief. Although he was surprised by Gil’s sudden insecurity, he remembered reading that estrogen could create mood swings, that Gil would be prone too. They’d only been together for the last fourteen months after all. While they’d sealed the deal with a commitment ceremony, they hadn’t talked about children when they conceived.

“Why would you say that? You have more to teach a child than anyone else I know. And I get to have amazin’ sex for the rest of my life!” Nick exclaimed, hoping that it would cease the tears and comfort Gil.

“B…b…but…” Gil sniffled.

“Gil, stop, and take a deep breath. You are a beautiful person inside and out. I’m the lucky one here. My baby is gonna be a genius and you’re gonna be a great father.” Gil looked at him suspiciously, which Nick returned with a genuine smile and nod of his head.

He kissed Gil before he could say anything else. “Here, do you think you can get up, Honey?” Gil nodded towards his outstretched hand.

As they got to their feet, Gil hugged Nick tightly and whispered “Thank you,” in his ear. Nick held him for a second longer and then kissed him deeply; adding “Besides, we still have to decide whether this nursery is gonna have birds or bugs in it; after we decide which college our little genius is gonna attend.” Gil grinned as Nick kissed the tears off of his cheeks.

Nick then ushered Gil into their bedroom, got him back into bed, and hung up his bathrobe. “Will you go get the picture?” Gil asked sheepishly, as Nick nodded with a smile.

Upon his return, Gil snickered, and within a few seconds was laughing. “What’s so funny?” Nick asked utterly puzzled, placing a small kiss on the picture and setting it on one of their dressers.

“You attending our baby in the middle of the night with no clothes on.” Gil finally blurted out, still chuckling.

“Well, you were only wearin’ a t-shirt under that robe. What about you?” Nick snapped back lightly as he crawled back into their bed.

Gil kissed him and they snuggled cozily into their familiar position, with Gil on his back and Nick partially on top of him. “Guess we won’t be able to sleep like this too much longer, huh?” Nick whispered as he lovingly rubbed Gil’s belly. Gil kissed Nick’s forehead and murmured “Thanks for coming to get me, I love you.”

“Always. Can ya’ get some rest now?” As Gil nodded, Nick kissed his lips tenderly, “Goodnight, I love you, Honey.” After some more sleepy kisses, they fell into a deep sleep.
