He’d returned home from his shift, going directly to her room as he did everyday. Sometimes he found her crib empty and proceeded to the bedroom he shared with Nick. He would sit in the rocking chair watching his husband and daughter sleep peacefully. Usually, Nick’s body was curled around her protectively reminding Gil of a fawn in the thicket, sleeping with it’s mother.

Today however, Jami was awake in her crib; talking to herself and her lady bug stuffed animal. Gil’s breath caught in love as he watched his daughter roll onto her stomach and put her head down to doze. Suddenly she caught his eye and sat right up squealing. He picked her wriggling body up and took her to the changing table. “Good Morning Jami. Would you like a baby sister or baby brother?” he asked her while taping her fresh diaper closed. She held her ladybug out to him and smiled.

“Come on, let’s pick out an outfit for you,” he carried her to her closet and set her down. She touched the red corduroy overalls and he gave them to her with the little hanger, then pulled out a little yellow shirt from her dresser along with some yellow socks. He was amazed that she pulled the clothing off and tried to put the hanger back in place. “Here are your socks, grab the shirt and pants,” Gil instructed. She tried valiantly to hold onto the socks when he picked her up again, and laughed when they tumbled to the ground. Gil smiled at her while he bent to retrieve them, suddenly noticing how much room was in the closet. “You could share your closet with a baby, couldn’t you?” he asked. She shrugged and held onto the clothing as they traveled to the bathroom.

Washing her little face and hands, he marveled at her expression. It was a tiny version of Nick’s face scrunching up when the washcloth went over her. “You could teach your sister how to do this,” trying to tame her gentle curls with a small brush. Jami reached for the tiny brush deciding to fix Gil’s hair, “No, Daddy-o doesn’t need to comb his hair.” He rubbed his face on her little cheek and she pushed his face away giggling. He wondered whether the new baby would look like him.

Standing her on the toilet, he got her dressed quickly and put her on the ground. “Come on Jami, let’s get some dinner.” Gil left and she obediently followed him out. She pointed to their bedroom door and said “Da…” and went to bang on it. “No, no, we’re letting Daddy sleep in today. Shhh..”

“Da….dada….” she insisted looking with concern. “Okay, let’s give him a kiss.” Gil picked her up, putting his finger to his lips and opened the door. Nick was deeply asleep on his back, one arm on his stomach, the other thrown onto Gil’s pillow. He bent down and kissed his husband on the forehead, and motioned for Jami to do the same. She gave him a baby kiss, clapping her tiny hands in pleasure. “Shhh..Jami.” She followed him out of the room and downstairs.

When she was safely buckled into her high chair drinking her breakfast milk, Gil quickly made some scrambled eggs for she and Nick, and a hamburger for himself. They were going to have tater tots and fresh fruit to round out the meal. He looked at her shaking his head when she threw her empty bottle on the floor and began talking to him in earnest. “It will be a few minutes, sweetheart. When your brother comes along, you’ll have to learn to be patient,” Gil waved the spatula at her. “Bruh…bruh....bruhver?” she asked back in confusion.

Bringing both of their plates to the table and tying her bib on, “Yes, you and I must have a talk now.” She licked her lips in anticipation of the food and gave him one of her thousand watt smiles. He couldn’t believe how much she looked like Nick with those excited brown eyebrows and that smile.

“Jami, your Daddy keeps arguing with me about giving you a baby sister or brother. Why does he do that?” She took a deep breath and opened her mouth waiting for a bite. He gave her a tot and took a bite of his hamburger. “You see, I want you to have a sibling, and I don’t know how to tell Daddy that it’s already happening. I’m frightened. It was hard having you inside me near the end.” Jami seemed to chew a bite of eggs thoughtfully. “Nick doesn’t know what it’s like carrying an extra twenty pounds of body weight around. My back constantly hurt, and that was just the beginning.” Gil gave her a piece of banana to work on while he grabbed a few more bites of his meal. “You not being able to talk isn’t easy. I never know what you’re thinking or what you’re going to do. How can we do it with two of you?” Jami offered Gil some banana, and he took a bite from her fist. He continued to eat and feed her until they were done.

With a yawn, he washed her highchair, her hands, and took off her bib. She began banging on the tray and Gil retched. He made it to the bathroom just in time. After a few minutes, he washed his face with lethargy. Getting himself together, he took Jami to the living room. He settled with her in the big recliner, remembering how good it felt to sit in that chair in his eighth month. He turned the television on to watch the morning news, explaining to her about the latest car bombing in Iraq.

“You’re gonna rot her brain watching all of that,” Nick said sleepily as he walked into the room. Jami wiggled out of Gil’s lap and went to see Nick. He picked her up, kissed her head, and took her back over to Gil. After giving Gil a deep kiss, he deposited Jami back into his lap and sat on the couch. Jami clapped her hands in joy at seeing both of her fathers. “The news never hurt anyone, and she needs to know what’s going on in the world,” Gil teased his husband, “Your breakfast is in the microwave, we had fruit to top it off.”

“Did you give her breakfast or dinner?” Nick winced rubbing his hand on his neck and yawning. He went to the kitchen, began the coffee maker, and got his breakfast heated up. Jami appeared around the kitchen cabinet and began talking to him. When she didn’t get an answer, she left to go play with her birds in the corner of the living room.

“Breakfast,” Gil answered turning off the television and coming to sit at the table to keep Nick company before he went to bed. “How was your shift?” Nick asked putting his plate down, and beginning to pour coffee into two mugs. “No thanks,” Gil put his hand over the cup. Nick shook his head and sat down with purpose.

“So, you’re still mad at me for bringing up the siblin’ subject, huh?” Nick poured syrup on his tots and dug in. “Okay, so it won’t be easier with both of them in diapers, but they’ll be close in age. Yesterday, Catherine told me how much she wished Lindsey had a sibling, especially since Eddie passed away,” Nick spoke while chewing.

Gil’s blood began to boil, “You aren’t going to stop this, are you? Is this all we’re going to talk about now?”

“So, your shift was tense, huh?” Nick continued to pick. He didn’t understand why Gil wouldn’t give him an answer about adding another family member.

“Damn it Nick, let it go,” Gil bent to kiss Jami and her pelican. “I’m sorry Baby, Daddy-o isn’t swearing at you.”

“Gil, all I want is an answer. Give me one good reason why we should wait, that’s all I’m askin’,” Nick put some eggs in Jami’s mouth as she climbed up on his lap.

“I’ve asked you not to feed her like that, she’s not a dog, Nick” Gil couldn’t contain his irritation anymore. “She’s already had her breakfast and doesn’t need any more food.”

“Are you a puppy?” Nick asked Jami, laughing when his daughter replied shaking her head ‘yes’ and opening her mouth again for another bite. Gil got up and went upstairs without another word in disgust.

“Un uh, your Daddy-o is giving me an answer, right now. C’mon Jami.” Nick hoisted her to his hip and followed Gil upstairs. When Gil wasn’t in their room or the bathroom, Nick was perturbed. “Oh well, let’s get you a clean diaper and get your stuff together for the sitter.” He kissed Jami’s head and carried her into her room.

Gil’s quiet sobs were barely audible, when Nick saw him sitting halfway inside Jami’s closet. He tried to put her down, but it upset her to see her Daddy-o crying. She clung to Nick as her bottom lip quivered in fear. So, all three of them were soon huddled halfway in the closet. Nick pulled Gil as close as he could and whispered “I’m sorry, honey. Please don’t cry.” Getting no reply, Nick rubbed Gil’s back tenderly as Jami crawled into Gil’s lap and put her hands around his neck.

“Awww, Gil, I’m so sorry,” Nick situated himself behind Gil and hugged them tightly to his chest. “I won’t bring the subject up again until you’re ready. I’m sorry. Please don’t cry,” Jami put her thumb in her mouth and snuggled into Gil’s neck.

Finally, Gil opened his eyes, kissing Jami’s head, he began to talk. “You don’t know what it’s like Nick. It was so physically difficult for me to carry her. I’m glad I did, but I don’t….I…” he trailed off as the tears began falling again.

“Oh Gil. I am so, so very sorry. I promise we don’t have to talk about this until you’re ready,” Nick said now choking up. He thought Gil was just being stubborn and didn’t realize how his needling had really hurt his husband. He also knew that it took a lot for Gil to get so emotional, and knew it was his fault. He wiped his own tears and hugged them even more tightly.

Jami wiped her little hands in Gil’s tears, and he kissed her tiny fingers. She got an expression on her face that neither man had ever seen, very solemn. “Goagle rewrs bruh” she explained. It was so serious that it broke the moment. Gil breathed deeply and smiled lovingly at her, then turned to look at Nick.

“I forgive you, and thanks. I guess I’m just tired. Tired of not seeing you and not sleeping with you. Tired of not seeing her learn what you’re teaching her.”

“I’m so very sorry Honey. We’ll talk about this when you’re ready, okay?” Nick gave him an apologetic smile and leaned in for a kiss. When their lips met, Gil knew it would be alright. Nick’s gentle and giving kiss gave him some reassurance. Jami’s hands lightly batting both their cheeks brought them out of the moment.

“C’mon, I’ve got to get her ready for the sitter and get myself ready for work. We won’t bother you here in your closet,” Nick got to his knees and pulled his daughter into his arms. He kissed Gil and rubbed his back again. Jami wanted to be held as they got her “bag” ready. They both kissed Gil on the head again as they headed out the door.

Gil got up as the doorbell rang. He headed to the shower, now exhausted and just wanting to get into bed with Nick. He knew that he could finally tell Nick about their new edition.
