STRANGE INFATUATION

The Admiral entered the ballroom; the Commander stepped up beside him. They both looked around the room, to see if there was anyone they knew. AJ was pleased that they’d had a valid excuse for not being there sooner, he couldn’t have been more ecstatic to have had their latest case drawn out making them miss the better of the day. These conventions always bored him to death.

"Sir, doesn’t it strike you strange that there aren’t that many women here, I mean this convention on gay’s in the military doesn’t just apply to men. Weren’t we supposed to formulate the military’s new take on gay relationships?"

"Of course not, Commander! Brass knows women are more sympathetic to this cause, seems they want to keep the status Quo and making damn sure of it."

"Well, Sir if I may ask? Then what’s the point in using large funds for this convention?"

"Politics, politics, Commander. They want the military to look good, that’s why."

The Admiral was looking straight at the Cmdr. "I’d say we go find the buffet that way we would at least get something out of a spoiled weekend, wouldn’t you say, Rabb?"

"Ay, ay Sir."

Heading for the buffet´ line AJ stopped and nudged the younger man his side.

"Cmdr, look over there, isn’t that Lt Austin?" Admiral Chegwidden asked his co-worker.

Harm glanced in the direction his CO indicated. Indeed he was right. Lt. Meg Austin was standing in the middle of the ballroom, in deep conversation with a senior officer. As she turned and looked at Harm, the sun outside broke through the clouds for just a moment, illuminating the Lt. making her hair shine like gold. The sight of his former partner left Harm a little breathless, she looked stunning. He hadn’t seen Meg since her last day of work. Often enough he had wondered what had happened to her, why she’d walked out on him? Why hadn’t she told him she was leaving? One day she was just gone. Harm shook himself from his reverie only to find the Admiral looking closely at him, suddenly very uncomfortably aware of his CO’s ability to read him. Harm tried very hard to appear indifferent to Meg being there.

"Yes, sir, it sure looks like it."

AJ wasn’t fooled for a second, although he did try to repress his knowing grin so he wouldn't humiliate the Cmdr too much.

"Well Cmdr. Why don’t you go over there and say hello? I’m getting some food before I starve to death. I’ll join you when I’d had my fill." Harm gracefully stood at attention as the Admiral took his leave. Harm swallowed and walked over to his former partner. "Lt. Austin?" he asked and interrupted her mid-sentence.

"Actually, that's Lt-Cmdr now. Nice to see you, Cmdr. Rabb." She smiled at him.

He smiled back and quickly kissed her cheek. "Congrats, Meg."

She blushed. "Thank you, Harm." Then she remembered that she wasn't alone. "Oh, let me introduce you." She turned towards the blond man who was curiously watching their reunion. "This is Cmdr. Harm Rabb, my former partner from JAG." Then she turned around again. "And this is Captain Chester Dawn, my current CO."

The two men shook hands and exchanged friendly 'Nice to meet you' while they eyed each other suspiciously, wondering if the others relationship with the tall blonde beauty at their side was really just a professional one. With the way his junior officer and this Commander Rabb were looking at each other, he decided that he should leave. "Oh, I think I just saw Lt. Radenbaugh. I have to ask her something, please excuse me." With that he smiled at Meg once more and went away.

"Well..."

"Well..."

Harm and Meg spoke up at the same time and exchanged smiles again.

"Your new partner?" Harm asked, referring to the Captain.

"No. Uhm, actually Lt. Radenbaugh is my new partner. In the beginning it was pretty weird because I'm the senior officer this time. But I got used to it soon enough, and we get along great. She's like my little sister. How about you? Got a new partner?"

"Yeah, a jarhead. Can you believe that? They partnered me up with a marine."

"Oh my. How bad is it?" They were joking.

"Well, she's not that bad."

"She, huh?" Meg grinned, trying to conceal that she was wondering if they were more than partners.

"Yeah, we're like brother and sister. Fight a lot and all that."

"I see. How's Bud doing?"

"Oh he's great, got married, has a kid."

"Bud? Really, that's great." She chuckled slightly.

"Hey Meg, you look great. You haven't changed at all." He was admiring her light blue sheath since he saw her. It was long and had tiny glittering highlights. He had noticed that it matched her eyes perfectly. But what he liked most was that it clung to her body as if she'd been poured into it. It had spaghetti-straps and a split on the right side that almost reached to her hips. He loved what he could see of her long legs due to that, but the deeply plunging neckline and the fact that it was practically backless and revealed enough cleavage so he had to concentrate on remembering to breathe. During all of the time that he knew her he had always thought that she was sexy, but this dress was the top of it all. She had never looked sexier before.

AJ was standing across the room sampling some smoked salmon; all the while he had his eyes on the two of them. He had been cursing the damp weather, wishing he was back home on his couch in his sweats reading. // Hell!! I forgot my book and I have to share with Rabb. God Damn, then I have to talk to him, Shit. Now if I was too share with the lovely Lt-Cmdr. that would be something altogether different.// Leaving his plate at a near by table, he moved to join them.

"Thank you. You look quite good yourself." She noticed that they weren't alone anymore. "Admiral Chegwidden, it's a pleasure to meet you again." She couldn't decide who of either man looked better in their Dress Whites. But she had to admit that Dress Whites and Golden Wings had never left her cold. Especially when Harm was wearing them her whole being was flushed with desire.

"Likewise, Lt-Cmdr. You’re looking stunning as always."

"Thank you Admiral. I could say the same for you, sir." AJ was bathing himself in the admiring look from the younger woman. Leaning in a little closer to the Lt-Cmdr, as he flashed a brilliant smile, he couldn’t help his flirtatious reply.

"Could? Does that mean you won’t?" The air between them suddenly hotter, the Admiral retreated a little.

"Not at all, not at all, sir." Meg blushed. She hadn't expected that her former CO would flirt with her because he hadn't ever done that. Maybe because she had worked under him back then, and with all the rules and regulations, he couldn't take that risk. She slightly bit her lower lip and smiled. But she had noticed that sometimes he looked at her in an admiring, maybe even, longing way. Like now. She slowly closed her eyes for an instant and smiled some more at the same time.

The band started to play a slow song. "May I have this dance?" the admiral asked her and wondered why he hadn't noticed her sooner. She wasn't just the tallest but as well the by far most attractive woman in the room.

"I'd love to." Meg smiled, slipped her glass of champagne into Harm's hand and let the Admiral lead her away to the dance floor.

Harm was baffled. *Are they actually flirting?* He thought. He felt jealousy building up inside of him yet at the same time, he was actually enjoying this exchange and wondered if now that Meg wasn't in the same chain of command anymore, the admiral would go further than flirting. And how would Meg react? But he couldn't even answer this question for himself. On the one hand he was certain that he would try everything to seduce her. She was the woman of his dreams. But on the other hand, there was something that kept him from that. Something that he hadn't felt with any other woman. He was afraid of her turning him down. Of course they had always been flirting. But it never got further. He had never told her how he felt because he knew that her feelings for him weren't the same. And he even got that proved when one day she was just gone. Now that he saw this playful bantering between her and the Admiral, he wondered if it was possible that she had left because she had a thing for their CO. No, he would have noticed that. She might be attracted to him, after all Admiral Chegwidden was a good-looking man. He himself had noticed that he was attractive. For women, of course, not that he'd be attracted to him. He remembered what convention they were attending here. *Ok, so some men are attracted to him as well. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But I'm not one of them.* His mind focused on the dance floor. Meg and AJ looked great together he had to admit. *What's she doing here anyway? I'll have to ask her if she's stationed in Pearl now, or if she just came for the convention. Just came for the convention? Oh god, what is Meg doing here?* His train of thought was stopped as AJ and Meg returned.

"Where did you learn to dance like that, sir?" Meg was curious; she had seldom met men who danced as if they learned it from Fred Astaire.

"Seal training." The Admiral grinned back at her. "How about you?"

"My mom taught me. She and dad used to dance a lot." She wanted to take her glass from Harm again and almost had to pull it out of his hands. That was when she noticed that he was practically staring her down.

"So Meg, why are you here? This doesn't seem like it's the kind of convention you would attend."

"Oh, what makes you say that? Like you would know."

A blonde woman walked by, Meg grabbed her by the arm and held onto her.

"Hey Harm, remember what I told you about my new partner? Lt. Jody Radenbaugh." She looked at her with an adoring smile. "Jody, this is Commander Harm Rabb, my ex-partner."

"Lt. Radenburg, nice to meet you." Harm eyed the young woman. So this was her new partner, a pretty one at that.

*I don't think I like the way Meg is looking at her Whoa! Maybe? Nah couldn't, it just couldn't...*

Then the young woman whispered something into Meg's ear. Both of them giggled sheepishly as if they were having a secret.

Meg looked at Harm sweetly. *I know exactly what you're thinking now my dear Harm, and I'm enjoying to keep you wondering.* "Would you excuse us a minute?" Meg and Jody walked to the ladies room, arms still hooked.

Harm had an unnerving feeling in his stomach, for a moment he thought he would be sick. Thank God he hadn't made it to the buffet yet. AJ was standing at an angle from the three of them which gave him a great view of the situation. He couldn't help chuckling to himself.

It looked like Meg had one upped Harm, but AJ saw it for what is was.

Not that he would say anything; he thought Harm needed to be taken down a peg.

Harm walked over to his CO. "Did you see that?" He nodded in the direction of the restroom where the women had just disappeared.

"Yes, it looks like we're both out of luck, Cmdr." Inwardly Chegwidden was screaming with laughter, while outwardly he still kept his surly demeanor.

"No. I mean, no, do you really think, I mean *MEG*? Don't tell me you actually think it's possible that she's, you know, one of them?" Harm frowned; he couldn't believe that he could have developed a crush on a lesbian woman."Well, is that all you have to say? Doesn't it bother you, sir?"

"Why should it, Cmdr? Its most men's favorite fantasy." AJ sent the Cmdr. a neutral look. "Two women together making love...It's a beautiful thing, wouldn't you say, Cmdr?" AJ wasn't sure how long he could keep this up; he felt his face would crack at any moment. But it was too much fun, so he couldn't stop now.

Harm grinned a little. It wasn't as if he had never seen cheap porn, jerking himself off, watching exactly that. But Meg? Lt-Cmdr Meg Austin? JAG, US NAVY? Never! "Well sir, but this is MEG I mean, our Meg."

"Our Meg, Cmdr?"

AJ had a teasing glint in his eye he couldn't quite hide.

Harm blushed slightly. "Oh jeez, you know what I mean, she worked with us."

"Really!?" The Admiral looked Harm straight in the eye, raising his eyebrows to the hairline that wasn't there.

"Cmdr, don't you wonder 'Hmh, why am I so small now?' Huh?" AJ couldn't help beating the younger man that should keep that flyboy grin down, at least for now.

At that moment Meg left the ladies room again. Alone. As AJ and Harm could observe from their position, she walked straight up to them again. "How do you guys feel about some fresh air? This place has a really nice garden." She completely ignored the fact that Harm looked at her as if her skin was green and AJ seemed to have a pleasant time due to his co-workers behavior.

Meeting her former boss's eyes, she knew right away he had seen through her little deception, and he'd had a little fun on Harm's expense. That didn't bother her in the least. It was kind of nice to have a co-conspirator.

"Ohhhh, I just saw somebody I'd like you to meet Harm, c'mon." She dragged him away.

AJ knew she was up to something, so he followed them at Meg's silent invitation.

Meg walked up to an older woman; Harm put her at an age a little older than his mother. He wondered who she was just as the thought passed. Meg introduced them. "Hello, Dr. Berk, I'm Lt. Cmdr Meg Austin and this is my old partner Cmdr. Harmon Rabb. I'm sorry to interrupt you, Dr, but I had the pleasure of attending you're workshop this afternoon. It was really educational. And Cmdr. Rabb here would very much like you to fill him in, so to speak. Would you be so kind, it's so much better when it comes from a knowledgeable person like yourself, Dr. Berk." Meg gave the doctor the most charming smile she could muster with out breaking down in hysterical laughter.

"Of course it would be my pleasure, Lt. Cmdr." The older woman smiled back at Meg and then turned her full attention to Harm. "Cmdr. Rabb, I'm so pleased that you have taken an interest in this subject. " Harm had a nauseating feeling he wasn't going to like this one bit. There was no way he could get out of this in a polite way so he put on his best flyboy grin.

Meg smiled. "That's so kind of you, Doctor. Harm here is a little shy, even when it doesn't seem that way, but as somebody who knows him very well, let me tell you that he's anxious to hear everything and he's very thankful that you're going to give him a detailed explanation."

"I'm only happy that you'll take the time, to enlighten me, Dr.Berk, but if you rather not..."

"Oh nonsense, it really is my pleasure, we doctors love talking shop. Now what is it you wanted to know?"

"Oh, I think he's curious about everything," AJ answered, not exactly knowing what was coming now, but from Meg's grin, this would be hilarious.

"Ahhh, well I ... why don't you give me the overall view, doctor." Harm was rattled, there was no way out. He felt like bolting but his CO was standing right behind him, and he wouldn't be able to get away without making a complete fool out of himself. When the doctor started talking he desperately wished he had.
