Cyclical

So this post is all about me.

Peak performance for me is eating well, staying fit, sleeping enough and working effectively with plenty of energy. I socialize and am enthusiastic.

I like peak performance, being in the flow.

If one aspect gets knocked out of whack, the downward spiral starts. Too much work, or too little sleep and I eat more to stay awake longer. I spend less time exercising, am less enthusiastic and cut back on social time and sleeping.

Eventually I get to the part where I'm no longer thriving, just getting by.

I read a book called "The Automatic Millionaire" a while back. It talks about paying yourself first. When a check comes in, make sure to put part into savings before paying your bills. Otherwise you'll pay everyone else first. You will be at the end of the line when it comes to holding onto money.

It makes sense to apply this to my time budget. By and large I have the same number of hours and minutes each day to do with as I please. I should pay myself in hours first. If that means waking up and going running before I catch up with work, or cooking decent food and socializing before I hit the office, then that's what I'll do.

All we have is time and choice, so it pays to very conscious of the point when decisions are made. Listening to "Getting Things Done", it seems that the contradiction of having more than one thing to do at once leads to stress. When you mentally accept another obligation - even if it's something as trivial as "I must clean my car" then you add another thing to your list.

I am very aware of my time budget now when I make these little obligations.

Hence my car is a little dirty and I am allocating time to cook right now.
