This morning, I accepted an offer from Queens Library for an adult services (snicker) position. No idea which branch I'll be at quite yet, but once I know you'll know, so you can come in and be shushed ( Read more... )

I hope so. Since I start in mid-December, I don't know if they'll be willing to give me time off by the time Midwinter conference rolls around (early January).

That said, I should have an idea of my schedule by then so, if worst comes to worst, I will try to make it down there for a day or two -- even if it's on my own dime (it's tax deductible, after all!).

Fantastic! Congratulations!

I swear, I know more librarians than any other professionals. I've even thought about going that way myself.

Talk to me before you do. Job searching is HELL, especially if you're in a major metro area with a library school nearby. In short: There are a TON of internships/assistant positions. There are lots of director positions. There are very few starter positions which, of course, you need in order to move up to the bigger places...unless you're willing to move to smaller communities.

I was very lucky in that NYC just increased the city libraries budget earlier this summer, so jobs opened up. The rest of my search has been appalling, which is why I haven't been chronicling it here.

But meanwhile...YAY! Thanks!

Fantastic news. Just to clarify, you're providing adult services in a queens' library? Is this the sort of place that Quentin Crisp might have frequented?

good luck

That's what Steven said! And my reply was/is: I sure as hell hope so!

(Actually, it's Queens as in "the borough of Queens" -- which to those not familiar with NYC will still seem funny, but I can't explain it any better than that!)

How exciting, congratulations! Now, from a purely selfish point of view, you make sure they'll give you time off next April! :-)
Well done, very pleased for you.
All together now...shush...!
