Wow, you got an offer from Oxford, well done :D It's certainly a hard decision. I'd like to encourage you to choose Sussex on the basis that it's a blissful haven of politically informed climate change shenanigans, but on the basis of the Sussex students I know personally, the majority of them are more into special K and sleeping through lectures. On the other hand, I doubt our generation of graduates will have as much trouble competing for employment, since university funding is already facing minimum 8% cuts and god knows how much more after the delightful Tories come in. There will inevitably be a lot less people entering the workplace with credible acadeic degrees. You should go where you really want to, but yes, you would be mad to turn down a place at Oxford. :p On an unrelated note, my boyfriend is a total climate change sceptic. It does my head in, but i'm doing what I can to win him over.
Thanks for taking the time to reply, I just assumed that nobody reads this anymore 8D But yeah, it's really weird... this time last year I wasn't even going to apply to university. Crazy stuff. The more I hear about Sussex, the less I like the sound of going there, and my school would never forgive me for turning down Oxford. The funding cuts also make me think that it's probably better to go with Oxford (I heard today that Ox & Cam are the only universities that will not be affected by the cuts... all the more reason to go there I think). Climate change deniers make me sad :( but I can understand why they don't want to believe in it (people never want to believe anything that requires them to make big changes in their lives). It also bothers me that people see it as a boring environmental issue rather than a moral issue... but anyway, you don't need me telling you that. Can I ask which universities you've applied for/what subject?
I actually haven't applied this year. I had a funny five minutes a while back and convinced myself that it wasn't worth applying and I had no hope of getting in anywhere decent. Now I really regret that, but I'll definitely be applying next year. I'd love to do English at Cambridge, which is a bit unrealistic but I'd never forgive myself if I didn't at least try. UCL would probably be my second choice, although I don't know if I'm cut out to live in London (again). Yeah, I can see why people wouldn't want to accept that our entire way of life is unsustainable, but it's pretty stupid to ignore the evidence of changes that are already happening just because they aren't affecting you directly. I hope Caroline Lucas wins in my constituency, even though I don't agree with all green party policy.
Oh well, you've got a year longer than everyone to read everything and practice your interview technique :) Cambridge is lovely. I actually prefer the course there, no Old English in sight. The idea of living in London scared me too much to apply to any of the universities there, although UCL sounds fantastic. Good luck with your application next year! Agreed - pretty soon people will have to face up to the fact that it really is happening - what with peak oil and other related issues. Also, Caroline Lucas (Y) - I met her in Brighton once.
