Myself, I don't mind reading serially. It's lovely to be able to devour an entire work in one go, but I've also experienced supreme disappointment that way, where early portions of the story are well-written, and the plot seems thoughtful and intentional -- and then I cruise into the ending of the story, and the resolution just falls flat. This is a problem I see in first drafts all the time, and not unique to fanon. Fanon just tends to substitute sex for resolution more often than your average SF does.
So I have always been fine reading WIPs. If the writer is any good, I'm still getting something out of the experience: it's the journey, more than the destination. I get to hang out with their characters, I get to see them struggle, I get to laugh and cry with them. I don't read books for the endings -- I read for all the painful, wonderful places in the middle.

Yes the journey, more than the destination. Exactly.

To be fair, it's like 95% of all fic, so you're in excellent (and good, fair, mediocre and flat-out terrible) company.
