It looks as though I won't be able to study abroad during my senior
year as I had planned. I forgot that I'll be applying for post-college
jobs and/or academic programs late summer/early fall and will need to
be around for interviews and such later in the year. Oh well, at least
I'll be saving money (to go towards a graduation trip perhaps?).
There are so many alternative certification programs for teaching.
Searching for the right programs is ridiculously frustrating. Every
state has a different name for the types of certificates or
credentialing options out there. My criteria are as follows:
*Teaching MS/HS science, preferrably biology
*Located in California, NYC, Maryland, or Washington D.C. (last two so I can be closer to my brother)
*2-3 year commitment
*Option to get my Master's in addition to teacher credentials during that period
*Salary equivalent to beginning teacher's salary ($35,000 - $40,000 + benefits in those states)
*Urban environment, low-income students would be nice
The programs I'm looking at so far are Teach NYC, NYC Teaching Fellows,
Baltimore City Teaching Residency, and DC Teaching Fellows. California
has no regional program as far as I'm aware, and finding information on
any individual program has been difficult. There are apparently 63
alternate routes to getting certification in CA. Oy. (Liane, Academy
for Urban School Leadership has a similar program in Chicago).
I thought I wasn't competitive for med school, but I am pretty much UW
Med School's average admitted student in terms of numbers. Weird.
