Tearing down the walls

May 20, 2010 00:26

Well, I'm renovating again. I've begun work on the dining room, at long last. This past week I've been burning leftover paid time off, and I haven't made as much progress as I'd hoped (or fantasized), but the project is definitely begun. I'm pretty psyched about it ( Read more... )

No electrical? Are there enough wall outlets? Does the ceiling fixture have the right kind of switch? I would make sure to go over the existing electrical in the room because there is no better time to upgrade then when the walls are down.

Very true. I think I've got enough outlets, but I should make sure that the ceiling fixture has been upgraded from the original knob-and-tube. I think it has. Also, hm, maybe this would be the right time to run a line through the exterior wall for an exterior outlet? Do I need any sort of special cable for that connection?

not cable in your wall, although the outlet should be rated for exterior use and properly sealed where it penetrates the siding to avoid leaks of water or cold air.

That I can do. I'm thinking about doing a little structural work on a window before I close the wall up as well.

Renovations! That is still utterly daunting to me and yet kinda fascinating at the same time. One of these days I suspect I'll be doing something like that... Take progress pictures!

Well, there's the part where you clean up the front room and make the downstairs bath a little more presentable. But yeah, you're getting there!

You slay me. It's only taken you, what, sixteen years? to get around to making the downstairs livable? You just don't WANT people to come over :-)

Aha, Alison, a palpable hit! Good comeback, too.

I know for a fact that plaster is more like 140 years old. Recalling its composition, I guess you're wearing protection.

Just think, if you'd started on this part back when it would only have been 120-odd years old. :-)

Good luck! I don't know when I'll next be in the 'Burgh but I'd like to see the kitchen sometime.

I'd be thrilled to show you; I'm pretty obsessed about showing off my 'progress'. Maybe when you visit I'll actually have the dining room done. And thanks for the pic of you and F, by the way- it is a good one!
