Ask LJ: third-party iPhone headphones?

So my iPhone earbuds are starting to fail. This is the second pair that has done so, and I'm nowhere near replacing the iPhone 3G yet. There are a lot of third party replacements available, with prices from $20 to above $200, and I have no idea what a realistic price for a reasonable set would be. Several of my friends have had success in going to the Apple store to get them replaced under warranty. The things seem to have the lifespan of a mosquito.

Given the price of the Apple iPhone earphones I don't see any advantage to going 3rd party.

When I bought my new pair of earphones (haven't broken any yet, was just finding out the ones I had hurt me) the guy at Staples said generally SkullCandy is good because making headphones is all they do. Don't know how they are about mikes, though.
