Okay, so, I have this older computer that seems to have become unstable. She resets randomly, sometimes after hours of problem free operation, sometimes in quick succession. Since some of my tax info is on her and I don't want whatever is going on to ruin anything before tax time, I've moved over to using an old laptop for my web browsing and ( Read more... )

1)Assuming the resetting issue with my puter is from viruses (which I had a month or so ago) or the like, or general system instability due to errors in some line of code, would Linux fix my problem?

If it's a hardware issue, no. If it's Windows being wonky, then yes.

2)Would it wipe my harddrive when switching over?

Depends on how you set it up. You could partition the drive and have half-Linux, half-Windows and keep some stuff. Linux would take the free space and utilize it for its goodness. Or you could go full bore, balls to the walls and just make the whole drive Linux.

3)Why are you pro or anti-Linux?I've only put it on a computer once, and it wasn't a good experience once the initial "Yay, I've told Bill Gates AND Steve Jobs to bite my crank!" bliss faded. I had a bitch of a time finding wireless card drivers and ended up going back to XP after the drivers failed. That was a sad day ( ... )

That did help, thanks!

I may have another old laptop hidden away that might work just as well as this desktop, or at least give me a test case to judge off of. I'll have to see if it's still in storage.

See, I know I mentioned this before to someone, and I think it was you(like, 3 years ago). The end result to that conversation was that no, if I was happy with things as they were, and I did like gaming, it was not worth the headache to try out Linux. Well, some things have changed since then. Mainly, I'm working off of older machines none of which is younger than 4 years. All of them are notably slower starting up ( ... )

Heheh, that is true! Although, I haven't been posting much these days. LJ has kinda turned into an aggregator of various social groups for me.

Open up the case and look at the capacitors on the motherboard.

Google/Wikipedia "Capacitor Plague"

Lots of PCs in the 4-6 year old range dying from this right now.
