So, I spent over five hours in Casualty to be told that they have no idea what is causing my severe back pain, but it's not my heart, lungs, kidneys or gall bladder...

Well that's reassuring!

Yup, and although very comforting, am still in quite a lot of pain!

Ouch! :( My sympathies.
I'd offer an attempt at a diagnosis, but I'm only a student still...wouldn't want to jump to conclusions by virtual-diagnosing. I would, however, recommend popping an aspirin or two just in case it's a heart-related problem after all (god forbid).
