Friends,
When I was told "You'll love gig weekend" - I thought a whole bunch of bands where going to descend to these isles and, for a weekend, there will be music and, perhaps, a competition of some sort? Well, how wrong I was. Gig Weekend has something to do with boats so here's a small pictorial presentation...
You start by finding a 'good spot' to watch the race - we chose a nice place called "Rat Island". Follow it by a 'good spot' of tea whilst the heats continue.
Then you have a little giggle at people from "Falmouth" because it sounds and pronounced like "Foulmouth".
When the race finishes, the gigs come in and, in most cases, the rowers have already started celebrating before you. It's a grand sight - gigs coming into the quay, just like the Spanish Armada did all those years ago.
Celebrations (nothing to celebrate really, we barracked for no team and it was just an excuse to drink) get off to a good start when you run into your boss and your boss's wife and they offer you a glass of wine becase they are too drunk to realize what they're doing exactly. Claire and mine's good luck continue when we are allowed to stay inside the restaurant until 11:45pm, drinking, providing we lie and say that we had a meal at the restaurant if anyone asks.
Party continues on the beach where there is a BBQ and bonfire and which would have been a lot better if there weren't so many pre-teens getting excited with (bad) cover bands and pretending to get drunk on Coke, Tango (Fanta) and Lilt.
By this time, we were well trashed. We had a burger, ran into some friends, complained about the damp in our bathroom to the builder who lives below us and that is most of what I can remember.
'nyhow, they had teams from all over the world - including Iceland/Netherlands/similar. They were all, like, Aryans and wearing the (traditional?) intimidating black uniforms just like on The Might Ducks 2(Gud werk keptin duck).
Gig Weekend was top!
