State of the Union: Technology and Time

I decided about a month ago I was wasting precious time on the internet checking blogs and webcomics manually that I could be wasting on the internet in new and different ways. I finally buckled down and set everything I could up in Google Reader. I'm subscribed to about 100 different sites and I seem to get around 50-60 updates per day. The nice ( Read more... )

I mentioned to John that I didn't quite hoist the gamer flag any more. Oh, I still play games, like Civ and WoW and maybe some Disgaea if I can figure out what we did with the PS2....and board games, natch. But I've sorta lost interest in what the next big game is. It might be due to working in the industry?

I realized that gaming comics aren't just occasionally unfunny anymore, I don't get the jokes cause I'm not up on enough stuff anymore.

There's been kind of a technology plateau too. I'm not sure I can explain it, but the newest and latest game isn't that much more advanced than one from two years ago. Playing something like Dragon Age isn't going to be 70% better if I do it now instead of in a year, there's no rush anymore.

I think I went through something similar with comics, as there was a time period when I read everything that came out, including WIZARD, and then after a while, the hype released its grip on me. I still obviously enjoy comics and I still enjoy games, I just don't enjoy them religiously. I lack the evangelical fervor.

LJ sites work well with Google Reader (just use the URL of the individual journal). I had been keeping up with LJ but was losing track of blogs on WordPress, Blogger and on people's individual sites.

My reading is split between writing (and writers), science topics I find interesting, webcomics, friends, and research for my next project. I tend to put off reading the research blogs the longest and comics the least. The research has to do with finding personalities, quirks, and information relating to a very specific sort of counter culture-- fascinating stuff but the one I'm least personally invested in.

Now if I get linked to an entry of a blogger I don't normally read but the entry is really amazing I usually add them to my reading list the way that you'd add someone to your friends list on LJ.
