THANK YOU!

Wow, you just became a whole lot cooler than I already thought you were with this post. I posted a couple Jay Z related entries a while back and I feel almost exactly the same way about him, except I'm not from NY. But, to be fair, it's not just NY, it's people in general -- people LOVE to take pride in where they're from or their heritage, and they love it when a popular song or artist comes along and gives their hometown or heritage props. Ugh.

Anyway, this entry totally made me think of "California Songs" by one of my favorite bands, Local H.

well here we go again
it's never gonna end
we're all so sick of California songs
we know you love L.A.
but there's nothing left to say
please no more California songs

...and fuck NY too

That lyric is amazing, except the fuck NY part. Like I said, I love my city but I do it without having a rapper tell me to.

The crazy thing is, Jay-Z doesn't live in my NYC. Not anymore at least. Go take your millions, and your famous wife, and vacation on an island.

Haha yeah, but he doesn't mean it in that way -- he's just sick of hearing songs about NY, like Cali. Not like "fuck your state" or anything.

EDIT: HA! Very well said in that last bit about Jay-Z residing on an island with his famous wife now.

That reminds me: I gained a lot of respect for Scarface (solo rapper and part of classic rap group Geto Boys) when he was featured on an episode of MTV Cribs some years ago. He walked the cameraman through his big home, which was all decked out in stainless steal, but was fairly empty for the most part, but still looked like it must be a mansion of some sort. But then, he says he wants to show you the view from his balcony or whatever, and steps out to reveal a view of the gloomy slums of downtown Houston. He bought or rented an old abandoned warehouse and turned it into his home because he "never wants to forget where he's from". I think that's pretty damned cool.
