Who I like:
Lisa Hannigan
Joanna Newsom
Ani DiFranco
Emmy the Great
Florence + the Machine
Brandi Carlile
Bat for Lashes
St. Vincent
Tegan and Sara (yes, I suppose they count)
CocoRosie
Tori Amos (some)

Lisa Hannigan
Cathy Davey
Joni Mitchell
Edith Piaf
Nina Simone
Billie Holiday

Those are the female singers on highest rotation for me, and Bjork has been sneaking in there as well.

I feel like I really should listen to Bjork. Any recommendations as far as songs/albums?

I've never been crazy about Bjork, but recently I've fallen in love with her first album "Debut".

I also forgot to mention Patsy Cline and Portishead.

She's my favorite Canadian female voice right now.

Nina Persson

Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell! I also love Mar but seem to recall that you're not a Swell Season fan.

Huh, I haven't heard of a few of those on your list. I'll have to check them out. Here's a hauntingly beautiful song by the Bangles, many would never guess was them.

and I remember how shocked I was when I found out the woman singing in the following song is the same woman who fronted Four Non Blondes and sang "What's Up". Linda Perry feat. Grace Slick, another badass female rock vocalist, formerly of Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship.

I've always loved Linda Perry's voice.

I found Four Non Blondes annoying back when they got temporarily popular in the early/mid 90s. Then I heard this song on the Crow: City of Angels soundtrack and fell in love.

Also, ever listen to Nikka Costa? She's great -- especially her first album. And then there's Jill Scott, who blew me away both on the radio and in concert...

I'm beginning to dig Joanna Newsom. I can understand why some folks may be turned off by her voice. But I personally like her voice.

I need to listen to more Bjork. I adore Bjork's song "All Is Full of Love."

Oh, Joanna Newsom. She is just wonderful. I love her voice. I think it has a heartbreaking quality to it, especially on the album Ys. The last three minutes or so of "Only Skin" are perhaps my favorite part of any song.

Hah! I recognize the album Ys only because tony_dot_bmp did an artistic homage recreation of that album art cover.

*listening to the pretty song "Only Skin" right now*

That entire album is incredible. Quite an artistic achievement.
