Improv

Allelujah had never been one for cliches, but this really did seem like the time to say 'it's quiet; too quiet.' He had been expecting something--armed guards, an alarm system, a yapping dog. Anything. Yet there was nothing. The floor didn't even squeak as he padded down the hallway on the balls of his feet, the last door swinging open with a light touch.

His breath caught at the sight of a figure lying prone amidst the tangle of covers. God, he could smell her. It drove him so mad, got him so drunk, and pushed all sensible though from his brain so quickly that he didn't notice the presence sliding up alongside him until it was too late. It earned him the barrel of a loaded pistol against his temple. He went very still.

"You have exactly five sec--" The biting threat died on her tongue. He may have heard an "Oh, God," muttered quietly before the woman was moving back and away, retreating into the bathroom again with a sharp click as the lock engaged.

He swore under his breath. Looking at it now, the lump under the covers could be nothing beyond a mess of pillows. A diversion. Clever. That was just like her.

He inhaled sharply, steadying his swimming senses. She could have blown his head off at any moment if she had wanted.

"Sumeragi," he broke the painful silence, having known her too well and in too many ways to bother with the 'Miss' anymore. No answer. He moved to the thin door separating them, allowing his two-tone eyes to slip closed, his head leaning against the cool wood. "Talk to me." He jiggled the knob for emphasis.

"Go away." She sounded so very far away, her voice warbling as if coming through an old radio or a veil of pent-up tears.

"No, I won't," he insisted, his voice an odd mixture of bull-headed insistence and soothing tones. "I came here for a reason and I'm not leaving until I see this through."

"What do you want from me?"

And that was a very dangerous question.

"We need you." His tongue felt fat and lazy in his own mouth, out of practice from the years spent cooped up in some godforsaken cell wishing they would just hurry up and execute him already.

"I'm not interested in killing anyone anymore."

He was secretly glad she had locked him out, as irritating as it was. He didn't want her to see the dark look spreading across his features, a tipped ink well of anger and frustration. "You weren't so concerned about anyone else's well-being four years ago." He hated himself as soon as he said it.

"You son of a bitch," her voice slithered through the air like a viper. "You fucking liar! I did everything for you! I could have left you to die at the orbital block and yet...I-I didn't want to see you die. I didn't want to lose you..." She trailed off uncertainly, voice hitching brokenly in her chest.

And now it was his eyes that began to sting. "You're right. I am a liar. 'We' don't need you. Celestial Being could go on just fine without you." This was the hard part. "But I need you."

The door came open all too suddenly. He pitched forward and she caught him before he could right himself. Neiher of them seemed to mind.

"I thought I lost you," she breathed the word into his forehead with a kiss, stroking his hair.

And everything was beautiful again.
