charmingeyes. Happy Birthday!!!!! I LOVE YOU, TWIN! :)
Summary: What do you get when you have an Astronomy Tower, stars, and two people who despise each other? A whole lot of fun. ;)
“What are you doing here, Potter?”
“What are you doing here, Malfoy?”
Danica Malfoy glared at him with her dark grey eyes. “This,” she said, standing up from her position on the floor, “is my tower.”
“I wasn’t aware that your father had bought the Astronomy Tower. I thought it was the one thing he couldn’t buy,” said James Potter dully.
“Really witty,” said Danica scathingly. “Tell me, is your father still living off of other people’s charity simply because he struck down some ugly guy with red eyes?”
James shook his head sadly. “You’re pitiful, did you know that? Voldemort was the most dark wizard of the age. My father was the only one who could stop him.”
“I’m sure anyone could have stopped him. That’s what my father says.”
“This coming from the man who once was a ferret?”
“That gets really old after awhile. I suppose you’re just not quick enough to come up with real insults.”
“Oh, and that one never gets old,” James replied, rolling his eyes.
Danica crossed her arms over her chest. “You still didn’t tell me why you were here.”
“I didn’t know that it was any of your business,” he said simply, mocking her by crossing his arms over his own chest. This made the Slytherin let out a noise of disgust.
“I thought I told you, this is my tower.”
“You get more spoiled and every day. Does that actually turn other guys on?”
Danica shoved her nose into the air in a way that made James want to burst into laughter. “I’d rather be spoiled and snobby than walk around every day in what you call clothing.”
James looked down at the brown Weasley jumper he was wearing and grinned. “This, my dear Danica, happens to be very warm. Perfect for a breezy tower like this.”
Danica placed her hands on her hips, clearly becoming more annoyed by the second. “Would you just leave?”
“No,” he replied, leaning casually against the wall. He looked her up and down and smiled satisfactorily at seeing her pale cheeks tinge with pink. James loved getting a rise out of her - it was one of his most favorite hobbies. “Besides,” he said, eyes resting on her slender hips, “I’m rather enjoying the view.”
“You’re a pig!”
“Pardon?”
“Don’t look at me that way, Potter. You’re not even fit to be my house elf.”
“Touche’. You’ve wounded me.” He placed a hand over his heart to punctuate the point.
“Go - away,” Danica snarled through gritted teeth, her tiny fists clenching.
“No,” he repeated. “I’m going to stay here and do what I planned to do. Look at the stars.”
Danica’s eyes widened. “No one comes to the Astronomy Tower to look at the bloody stars!”
“I do.”
“You’re joshing me.”
James grinned. “So you’re of the opinion that the only thing people come up here to do is engage in sexual activities?”
“Of course.”
James looked around the tower mockingly. “So...er, where’s your sexual partner? Is he invisible?”
Danica scoffed at him. “Wouldn’t you like to know.”
“Yup.”
“What?” she snapped, taken aback.
“I’d like to know.”
“Good." She smiled smugly. "Then I won’t tell you.”
“Why? I asked nicely.”
“Do I look like I care? Besides, what’s it to you?”
“Just trying to prove your theory that people come up here only to snog.”
“I wish you would just leave.”
James rolled his eyes. “But I’m allowed to be here. This is my tower, too.”
“But - ”
“Danica, just shut up.”
She opened and closed her mouth a couple of times, trying to grasp his meaning. “What did you say?”
“You heard me. Don’t you ever get tired of snapping at each other all the time? For Merlin’s sakes, I just want to look at the stars. You want to wait for your partner. So can we just do it in peace?”
“Fine,” Danica huffed.
James sat down, leaning against the wall to get a good look at the stars. Danica sat next to him, a couple of feet away. The two of them sat in silence for quite awhile before Danica finally broke the silence.
“I - er, my name is after a star.”
James smiled. “I know.” He tried to reign in his shock as she scooted closer to him, so that their shoulders were almost touching.
“I have no, um, partner.”
“I figured.”
“You did? What, do you think I’m not capable of getting a man?” Her eyes flashed.
“I didn’t say that. I find you quite attractive.”
“Well, then what was that comment supposed to mean?”
“I figured you didn’t arrange to meet anyone up here because no one was coming.”
“Oh.” Her voice was surprisingly soft.
James let out a sigh and rested his head against the wall. For some reason, he was suddenly tired. He didn’t know if it was because the sky was pitch black, or because the breeze was blowing softly over him. He didn’t know if it was because he felt so comfortable being up in this tower, or because he was drained from arguing with Danica.
Danica.
She had to be the most irritating girl he had ever met. No one knew quite how to set him off like she did. It had been that way since they’d met each other at age seven and a half. She just plain wore him out at times. And yet, now, at this moment, she wasn’t even speaking. It was kind of nice, actually.
James froze.
She hadn’t.
He looked down. Danica Malfoy’s head was on his shoulder. Her lips were dangerously close to his neck. Oh, Merlin.
“Potter,” she said quietly.
“Yes?” He tried not to sound as though his insides were squirming.
“Nothing. It was just awkward not hearing you talk.”
He smiled despite the butterflies swarming around in his stomach. “Ah, I see. Now you’re missing the sound of my voice, are you?”
“Oy, shut up.”
“Why don’t you make me, Malfoy?”
“Fine!” she snapped, sitting up.
James’ eyes widened as Danica closed her fingers around the collar of his black robes. “What are you - ”
He was silenced by her lips.
"Wha - " he squeaked, gasping for air when they broke apart.
"No one knows about this, understand?" Danica said firmly, as her hands fumbled with unbuttoning the collar of his shirt.
"Er...uh, yeah," he said, dazed.
The two of them didn’t speak again for a very long time.
