Summary: When you tell someone you love them, sometimes that plan backfires.
“I love you.”
Time stopped.
She stood rooted to the spot. Eventually, she turned around to face him. “What?”
He looked properly ashamed.
She put her hands to her temples. “No,” she whispered. “You did not just say that. Please tell me I didn’t hear you say that.”
He opened and closed his mouth awkwardly. Then he spoke with a firm tone, one she’d never heard him use before. “I...can’t take it back now. It’s out there, in the open. You know.”
“Stop it!” she yelled at him, her eyes flashing angrily. “You have to take it back! Please, please take it back!”
“No.” His hands began to tremble.
She took a furious step toward him, wanting to lash out. How dare he do this to her! “Can’t you see, Neville? I can’t love you! I don’t love you. Now, just- take it back.” She was dangerously close to tears.
He stood his ground. “I won’t.”
“I hate you,” she spat at him.
“They say there’s a thin line between love and hate,” he told her, the desperation mounting in his voice.
“That’s nonsense, Longbottom! You know it. You have no idea what you’re talking about. Go away from me.”
“Why should I?”
She looked up at him. “He’ll kill you.”
Neville swallowed hard. “If that’s what’ll happen, so be it. I don’t care. I love you and I’m not going to give you up.”
She was silent for a few moments. Then she plunged her hand inside her robes and pulled out her wand. Neville stared at her. Before he could stop her, she pointed the wand at herself and yelled, “Obliviate!”
Neville caught her in his arms as she collapsed. The spell she had cast upon herself had clearly not done what was intended. She’d knocked herself. “Pansy,” he cried softly, “what have you done?”
“Longbottom!” snapped a voice. Neville looked up with horror, and tried to avoid the grey eyes that penetrated his.
Draco Malfoy, Pansy’s husband, was glaring at him.
“Well, well,” he started in his slow drawl, “what do we have here?"
