Talking Meme: MY QUEEN
lynzie914 asked for my favorite Bela scene(s)/episode, and I was only too happy to oblige. Beware: Here there be flailing.
Aaaaaahhhh, despite the fact that she’s in so few (sob) episodes, it is incredibly difficult to choose between “Bad Day At Black Rock” and “Red Sky At Morning.” I think ultimately I have to go with the latter because there’s just more of her in it (although Bela aside, I think “Bad Day” is a better episode; re: it is such a fantastic introduction to her character, and I must acknowledge the perfections of her stand-off with Dean in her apartment and the scene where she shoots Sam). Things in "Morning" that I adore with every fiber of my being:
+ “You know, when this is over, we should really have angry sex” & Dean’s reaction, gaaahhh.
+ “Never mind. I’ll just do what I’ve always done. I’ll deal with it myself.” Aadlkfjalfjlafjladjflajflaksdf THIS WOMAN. She knows she fucked up and that she’s screwed, but when they demand to know her secret she doesn’t give them the satisfaction because it might get their sympathy but she doesn’t need their pity, she doesn’t need to explain herself to these men who have made assumptions about her like everyone else in her life. She digs her own grave in so many ways but her motivations are completely understandable when you know her backstory, and I just love her strength of character so, so much, even if it ends up being her undoing.
+ This is completely shallow, but I freaking love watching Dean hold her in the rain while Sam is conjuring the brother. I know it’s not romantic, but the fact that he still holds her even though he hates her makes me flail, and I can pretend it’s romantic.
+ Dean: Hey, Bela, how'd you get like this, huh? What, did Daddy not give you enough hugs or something?
Bela: I don't know. Your daddy give you enough? Don't you dare look down your nose at me. You're not better than I am.
THE FORESHADOWING. Oh god it’s painful. Lauren’s acting is so great- the way her face just shuts down and how all the humor dies from it. I love that Bela instantly volleys the question back at him.
+ Dean: You know what, you’re right. I'm not gonna kill her. I think slow torture's the way to go.
BRB CRYING FOREVER. Because this is also foreshadowing because she’s going to Hell, and he probably did torture her. I don’t know how much of S4 they already had planned (I’ve read that Dean originally was not supposed to go to Hell and that Sam’s powers would have developed in S3 if not for the strike, but IDK if that’s true since it was on, you know, the Internet), so maybe the line about torture is pure coincidence, but even if it is, it’s really fucking great coincidental foreshadowing. And fucking awful, of course. *FLINGS SELF OFF NEAREST CLIFF*
+ “You do this out of vengeance and obsession. You're a stone's throw from being a serial killer.” OH LOOK WHO UNDERSTOOD DEAN AND SAM BETTER THAN DEAN AND SAM DID. Hiya, later!seasons!Dean, do you have anything you’d like to say?
+ “I didn’t want you thinking. You’re not very good at that.” HEEEEEEE she’s just so snarky. How many people on this show, let alone women, give Dean crap? And she just does it over and over.
+ Bela “fainting” into his arms and him calling her his wife and carrying her- MY HEART. Like again, I know it’s not romantic in the slightest, but as with the rain scene, I CAN PRETEND.
+ Bela’s ingenuity and quick thinking when getting the guard to give her and her “husband” more privacy and the guard’s reaction when he sees Dean- HAHAHAHAHA.
+ How gorgeous is Bela in this episode? Enough said.
+ The look that Bela gives Dean after he says he got a hand of glory at the end of his Thai massage. It’s so- indulgent almost? I read it as she thinks he’s childish but is also genuinely amused. And he looks so embarrassed! Embarrassed by Bela! Gah.
+ “You’re so damaged.” / “Takes one to know one” and her smile. *wibbles* THEY WERE SUCH PERFECT FOILS, I HATE YOU, SHOW, I HATE YOU.
+ Bela: Well, it was in a tow-away zone.
Dean: No, it wasn’t!
Bela: It was when I finished with it.
HEEEEE, she messed with the Impala. And the way Dean almost has a heart attack and Sam freaks out over him- omg it’s adorable.
+ “On silk sheets, rolling naked in money” and DEAN’S FACE. He’s just like, yeah, all right, I can get on board with that. Why did you never get on board with that.
+ “Can I shoot her?” / “Not in public.” LOLOLOL.
This episode has some issues for sure (the icky Gert/Sam stuff, for one) but no more than any other SPN episode, if you ask me, so I hate that it gets all this terrible flack. Is it the Bela show? Yes, in some ways. Are there other characters who get their own episodes without getting half the amount of backlash? Um hi, haaave you met Bobby and Crowley? So screw fandom and its misogynistic hatred of this fabulous woman who dared to be just as cunning and amoral and conniving as some of the most beloved male characters. This episode is awesome.
