While reading Chapter Two of HQoW Book Five, and I was reminded about a question I had in regard to those elf hats that Hermione knitted

I agree with your thinking regarding the house elf situation. They wouldn't be freed just because they picked up a hat Hermione intentionally left lying around - and Hermione might've known this too. She might've put the hats there to plant in the elves the want of freedom, not knowing she was succeeding to do the opposite.
Yeah, it's eerie how correct Hagrid was in that scene, whether he realized it or not.
Seems to me that it means that that's one less piece of his soul that is available to him, should he die. Maybe I'm reading it wrong... but it seems that if he dies, and there are Horcruxes out there, then he can use them to regenerate himself. If they're destroyed, then he can't regenerate. He will die when he is killed, with no hope of returning. This renders him "mortal."
I'm not exactly sure how it works. For some reason their able to destroy regular horcruxes but the origina (Voldemort's body) the actual soul stays. It seems it was Voldemort's "soul" that was possesing things. Not any of the Horcruxes. Somehow with even one Horcrux there it ties down the original soul, from "leaving".
There must be some rules or something to it, but we don't know enough about it really, to know whether the original "soul" is more of the real thing.
Ooh, I haven't read any HQoW stories in forever - now I'm gonna hafta check it out, teehee. Oh, and I loved the reference to Dumbledore's brother in HBP!! Did you notice he was at the... thing in the last chapter, too? Btw, I've seen your name on SQ - I'm a member, too! I friended you if that's alright.
Sure, no problem, although I'm not sure if/when I'll friend back. I've lately been slightly overloaded with the amount of LJ friends, so I haven't been friending back very much lately.
