Sending printed samples to DAW and Realms of Fantasy today. In apparent reward for finally getting off my duff and doing the self-promotion I've been saying I would do all month, my Freedom of Teach model is also supposed to show up today, assuming the Postal Gods favor me ( Read more... )

I think it sounds like you've found an efficient system for yourself. Not only does it save your time, but you also have a pile of thumbnails and colour keys that will really show your progression over time and perhaps allow you to mix and match elements of your past thumbnails that didn't make the cut into something more.

And any umph in self-promotion is always great to hear!

Heh. I don't know that I've ever pulled out the color studies again - I usually get annoyed enough at the failure piles that they just gather electronic dust.

I've never managed self-promotion at all. I could never see the cost-benefit ratio working out, but now that I seem to be "established" perhaps it's either too late or just time to start. sigh...

I'm shifting gears to the more spec-project driven sphere this year and hoping for the best.

Fingers crossed for us all!

Heh. Truth be told, I've yet to have it produce any results, but I figure for the price of doing 3-5 sample envelopes twice a year... it's a pretty negligible cost, and if it does produce some results, it's well worth it. If I could figure out a way to directly talk to the art directors who have the better-paying gigs, I'm dead sure it would work better, but I've always gotten the impression that Irene's the only book/magazine AD who actively goes to cons and has work in that pay grade. (I could be totally wrong, though, who knows.)

I wish you luck with the spec projects! I'm pretty curious to hear about it, actually, but I imagine you'll tell all of us when you can.

Are you going to Illuxcon in November?

I've no idea how it'll go (I certainly don't expect to get biz from it), but I'm fascinated to find out.

Nah - it looked (much like the Master Class) like it would be neat to go to, but not really worth the expense.
