Well, I'd have to say that the most obvious difference is the use of recently developed technology as a tool to make Carrie's humiliation . . . um, I don't want to say "worse," but maybe more widespread, in that there's a website where anybody with internet access can watch a video of the period/shower scene. That really stands out for me, because I find it so easy to imagine myself in Carrie's place (something similar happened to me when I was in 7th grade, except I was in class and bled through my pants, but I was able to run away . . . I actually ended up hiding in the gym locker room!), and I can't help but think it would be even more devastating to have the video posted online . . . and then to see it again later, at the worst possible moment . . . it make the breakdown even more understandable.
Maybe I should link to this post made by one of the women I follow on tumblr, in which she writes about how the first movie portrayed the other girls at Carrie's school as the really evil ones who were making their boyfriends
