I realized that I am kind of sad that I have not been ljing about the different phases I have been going through since arriving. Sure, I've been emailing all about what I have been doing, but I haven't talked much about the different emotions, and the perspective changes that I experience almost every day ( Read more... )

Hi Gina!
I'm sorry things have been a little rough. If you're going to Andalucia, you HAVE to go to Torremolinos/Costa del Sol. If you are even the slighest fan of seafood, you HAVE to go. :-) I actually hate fish, but the sea bass there was spectacular (along with all the other seafood).
As to traveling elsewhere, I would suggest Sevilla. It's been awhile since I went to Spain, but I remember loving Sevilla. (Although, you really can't go wrong anywhere you go!)

Well, I am already in Andalucía (granada). I am thinking of hitting Malaga this weekend, and will probably hit Sevilla in April.

Thanks for the advice!

Malaga is definitely a good choice, too. :-)

take those emotions, spread them out over a year, and welcome to my world. ;)

i worry the same things about coming home and feeling out of place. i'm sure it will happen, but you just have to believe that feeling out of place is just a phase, just like the others that you have gone through, and it will pass in time.

yeh, I think that life can be broken down into a series of phases, and we probably repeat them at times, like phases of the moon.

Where in Spain are you again? Because it really depends on where you are and what you like to do?

If you're up north, you could take the Eurorail into France or something of that nature, if you've done sight-seeing around your area already. Um...I lived in Salamanca and I love that city, but I also took the bus and rail around to other cities. Then at the end, for the last two weeks, the family I was with moved to their beach house in Almunecar, so I went there. You *must* see the Mediterrean if you get a chance. It's so freaking different from the Atlantic Ocean and it's toxic water on the east coast. hee.

I'm in Granada, so the south. I am thinking about heading to Málaga for 2 days and one night. Not sure though. My French roomie went to Almuñecar last weekend, and she said it was okay, but she went the next day to Salobreña and liked that better.

I like walking around and looking at pretty things...I'm simple that way. I feel like most of Spain will allow me to walk around and look at pretty things.

seeings how i've never been to spain i don't know what i'd do on a five-day trip. probably fly back to the states and visit my favorite roomie ever! :)

after Marine goes back to France you should try to go there to visit her so you can add one more country to your list.

I am definitely thinking about doing that, especially since Marine is pretty awesome.

If I had $1000 and liked flying and dealing with jet lag, I totes would do it!

I just wanted to say I think it's really great that you're doing so well under all of the pressure/uncertainty/homesickness you've been dealing with. I think I'm probably going to have about 17 panic attacks on the plane to Germany when I go next fall, but seeing that you're doing pretty well over there in Spain has made me feel like I can handle it too....maybe?
Have you thought about visiting Portugal at all? I don't know much about it, but isn't Portugese really similar to Spanish?
Oh, and also, are you still thinking of staying at St. Mary's this summer? I am sort of thinking about it as well...don't know for sure yet.
Well, wherever you end up going this weekend, have fun!!

The whole getting to Germany and the first month will be the hard part, but once you get situated you will really enjoy it. It is really hard to believe everyone who tells you that, but I have discovered its truth.

I am planning on working at SMCM this summer. If you do end up staying, maybe you would want to room together? I was thinking of getting a single if I couldn't find anyone that I knew to room with.

I will definitely think about rooming with you if I end up staying (which is 90% going to happen). I don't know if my other friend who I said I would live with is staying yet, but if she doesn't I would like to room with you. cool.
And another question...Have you made friends with mainly Spanish people or other international students? Has it been hard to meet people?

I've made pretty much all international student friends. I am having trouble getting up the courage to approach Spanish people. The men always seem a little slimy, and the women are like YOU WILL STEAL OUR MEN. Though I did have a conversation with a girl working at a jewelry shop the other day, and that was pretty cool.
