Their guide had fled. Barbara presumed that he heard her screams and left before he could be blamed for whatever someone might have found in the mine. Maybe they'd see him in town later on and he'd ask how they got out, and where they'd retrieved the box from. Or maybe he'd fled town to another place where he might seek his fortune, or find his family. Who knew.
"Right, I'm going to clean myself up and find the Doctor to show him this," Barbara told the Captain once they were back on board the TARDIS. Most of the large balls of goop had dripped from Barbara's hands and the box as they trekked back to the ship. Some, however, continued to cling in a disgusting way to the layer of body juice still covering the box. "Is there a message you'd like passed on?"
