The attack had left Rose filthier than she thought, and between a long shower and then breaking up a fight between Christian and Adrian of all people, she missed that Lissa wasn't at dinner. She'd been blocking Rose out earlier, and Rose hadn't been focusing on the bond, so it took a moment to filter out the distractions and find her.
As soon as the bond snapped into place, Rose screamed in pain. She felt like she'd just been hit in the face,
but it only took a second to realise it was Lissa who'd been hit. And was being hit over and over as rocks flew up from the ground into her. Rose clenched her jaw as she pulled herself out of Lissa's mind to gasp to her friends. "She's at the back of campus. Between the pond and the fence."
Without waiting for a response, Rose took off running as fast as she could, her mind half with Lissa. There were Moroi there surrounding her, holding her in place while Jesse Zeklos told her over and over again to make them stop hurting her. The Moroi students took turns using their magic to hurt Lissa as she screamed in pain, and finally Rose realised what was going on. There'd been rumors - from Christian in particular - about a group of royals forming an 'exclusive' group, and this attempt to force Lissa to use compulsion to make them stop hurting her had to be part of it.
An air user was was suffocating her now, and suddenly all the memories of the torture she'd endured at Victor's hands came back. The terror and horror overwhelmed her, and even as the air user stepped back, something in Lisa snapped.
Rose wasn't paying much attention anymore. She was close enough to see the next guy step up to hurt Lissa, close enough to see a flame rise in his hand, close enough to leap for him, tackling him to the ground and punching him in the face before he could throw it. Half the Moroi tried to pull her off, and she took them down too. She'd beaten three fully trained guardians earlier. The spoiled royals weren't even a challenge, and for once, Rose didn't care who she hurt as she punched anyone in reach for daring to try to hurt Lissa.
Having some sense of self-preservation, they scattered quickly. Rose looked around for Jesse, the guy who'd started all of this, but as she ran to his side, she realised he wasn't quite there - he was staring into space, his mouth hanging open.
"Spiders," Lissa said coldly, her eyes not leaving Jesse's. There was nothing in her but a black rage, determined to get revenge for what he'd done. "He thinks he's seeing spiders. That they're crawling all over him. But maybe I should have gone with snakes. That might have been better."
Rose jumped at the note in her friend's voice. The look on Jesse's face - like he was trapped in a nightmare - was bad enough, but the feeling of Lissa's magic through their bond terrified her. Usually her magic felt golden and joyous and wonderful. Now it felt slimy, black, dangerous, insane. "I think you should stop," she said, trying to calm her voice. In the background, she could hear people running towards them. "It's all over."
"It was an initiation ritual," Lissa said, smiling just a little as she forced another horror upon Jesse. He deserved to suffer. She could force him to do anything, and it was wonderful. "I refused to join them, but they kept bugging me so I came to the meeting just to shut them up. They wanted to know what I could really do with compulsion. Torturing someone until they make them stop. Guess I'm the best, huh?" She tilted her head, causing Jesse to scream silently. He wasn't allowed to make a noise. That would be too obvious. "I'm the President."
"Stop it," Rose said again, stepping towards Lissa. The feel of her magic was making Rose sick, and she was starting to be afraid Lissa had completely lost it. "This isn't how spirit is supposed to be used. It's wrong. This isn't you." She reached out to touch Lissa's arm, the solution coming to her. "Give it to me instead."
Lissa turned to Rose, surprised at the suggestion. She couldn't let go of the magic. It was controlling her now, but she wanted it too, she wanted to hurt him for what he'd done. "You can't use magic."
"No, I can't," Rose agreed, focusing on their bond. She couldn't use magic, but that darkness that was inside Lissa, that she could take. She'd been doing it automatically already. Every time she'd worried about Lissa's dark feelings, that blackness had jumped from her aura to Rose's, just like Adrian said. That was why her temper had been so short, why the feelings of rage had been uncontrollable. It all made sense now.
But that didn't matter as much as convincing Lissa to stop what she was doing. She was abusing spirit, using it to harm someone, and it was corrupting her, bringing out the worst side effects. She just had to convince her. "But you can give it to me. Focus on me, and let it it go. It's wrong. You don't want this."
She knew Rose was right, but she wanted to hurt Jesse, to hurt all of them, they had to pay. The blackness of her magic scared her, and she was breathing hard, trying to focus on her best friend, trusting Rose to protect her. It was just so hard to let go.
And then she did, that rage that had consumed her was gone, and Lissa sank to her knees, nearly weeping in relief. she was still upset, but that need to punish Jesse had gone.
The magic snapped through the bond so fast that Rose felt like she'd been hit in the face. She staggered backwards, her stomach twisting, and then the rage consumed her. She turned on Jesse, intent upon making him pay for what he'd done to Lissa, what he'd done to the others he'd hurt. Her fist connected with his nose, but that wasn't enough, and Rose pulled him to the ground. She wasn't fighting like a guardian now, just lashing out with pure anger, trying to destroy him.
There were hands scrabbling at her, but Rose ignored them. Even if she could respond, the madness that had been in Lissa was controlling her now, and that overwhelming blackness and rage had only one outlet - in violence.
