Admittedly, Rose kind of felt shitty about stealing Kyle away from Fandom right after he graduated - and right after the island decided to wander through time and space. But - she needed a human who could go up against a Strigoi and not instantly die, and Kyle was one of the few who fit the bill

Being 100% human in this situation had a benefit unknown to Kyle. He felt fine. On edge from knowing what he was about to do, but otherwise fine. The Strigoi didn't mean anything to him. They were just another kind of bad guy who could tear his face off if he made a wrong move.

Yeah, this was his life.

"You both look like you're going to be sick." Apparently that was his interpretation of serious guardian expressions.

Dimitri didn't like the idea of anyone going in to lure out the Strigoi, but especially not this kid he'd nearly killed a few months ago.

"Yes, well I know what happens in there," he replied evenly, that guardian mask of his perfectly in place to cover up how much he loathed they'd let it continue for the last few days. "And that's Rose's resting face."

Rose shot Dimitri a sharp glance. Did he forget she knew what happened in there too?

"There's nothing wrong with my face," Rose snapped. "And I'm not going to be sick. I'm serious, dammit."

Some times, sure.

"There's no reason you can't be both." He looked at Dimitri. Even with nine hours in a car with the guy, it was strange to look him in the eye after what had happened last time. There was a difference between standing in front of a man and seeing only the back of his head. He wasn't the smug Strigoi any more. The arrogance wasn't there. He wasn't the guy he'd seen in Fandom either. Kyle wasn't sure why he knew that though. "Any last minute tips?" he asked.
