I am currently on a generic low estrogen pill. I naturally have heavier, awful periods: 9 days, heavy bleeding, cramps that begin in my mid-back and extend down into my calves, the worst PMS on the planet

My sister and I both have the MIrena IUD. I'm on my second, actually. I have no complaints, and I don't even get a period anymore. Insertion is uncomfortable, but not much worse than having a very bad cramp (though after having a baby, most forms of pain seem rather "cute" in comparison, so it's hard to relate, I guess...) I don't know, I like it. It's great not to have to worry about babies or periods, and I don't find that it makes me crazy or anything.
I had an IUD -- the copper one. I had it put in about 2003 or so and it lasted 9 months. It was by far the MOST painful procedure I've ever had... they told me to take some motrin beforehand and I thought I was gonna die. I had several friends who have had both IUDs before children and everyone states IUD insertion is more painful for 'pre-childbirth' women as opposed to women who have had children -- cuz w/childbirth your body is ready to push something out and after childbirth your cervix is open more. Plus, it's never ready to have something larger than sperm go up it. My periods got heavier and longer... and 9 months later I bled for 23 days and they took it out.
My older sister had the Mirena put in a few years ago. She had the same problem w/heavy and long periods and had to get it taken out w/in the year.
Ironically, my oldest sister had the old one from the 80s that got taken off the market... SHE never had a problem.
I have had the Mirena for around 3 years now. (I did have a child though) It's nicer than remembering to take a pill or change a patch.
One of my complaints with it is little to no warning as to when you are going to have a period. I'll skip like 3 months and then bleed for 16 days. There's little cramping and nothing but wild mood swings to warn me. It's led to more than a few embarassing moments at the office but overall not too bad.
The insertion wasn't horrible. It felt sharp like a needle and I had an interesting cramp but a few deep breaths and I was good to go.
Overall I'd say I'm about 80% pleased with it and I haven't gotten preggers!!!
