What is the strong aversion to choke collars? When you have a dog trained with a particular methodology, you need to stick with that methodology. It's like telling somebody who has been allowed to go through school all their life writing with pen and paper, and with their right hand that they now have to write with a quill and their left hand. The person might be able to do it, but they may also balk at the idea. When I used a martingale collar, though, I never had a problem with it slipping once adjusted properly. You might have a faulty collar, or the clasp may not be tight enough. If your dog, though, was trained with a particular collar, and the school/organization where you got the dog is still recommending that collar, why change? It's more consistant for the dog, which will give you better behavior from the dog. Just something to ponder.
Hey Sarah, I don't remember if I ever answered this since I haven't been on here in forever. I've just never liked the praise/correct form of training. The praise part is good, but the corrections don't really fix the issues. Giving the dog a correction for scavenging, at least for Zorro, only works for the moment; it doesn't teach him that he shouldn't scavenge in another location or the next time he sees something. I like to work with the clicker and the martingale because it is a gentler collar and method of training. I'm not explaining this well lol; I think I'll post once I'm back at school in a few hours.
