I'm looking for a website that I think was posted here before, but I just went through a year and a half of posts and couldn't find it again. It's a site that compares all the guide dog schools in the states. It didn't give rankings, but basically listed different attributes and rated them on a scale of 1-5, I think. It also talked about ( Read more... )

Noah's Assistance Dogs is about 45 minutes or so from where I live. They have so very few teams out that it is difficult to make a generalization of their quality of service. I can tell you that I had a very close friend go there to get assistance with training. She had such a horrible experience that she ended up giving up on the idea of a guide dog altogether. The training portion was on track, the interpersonal communication was well below standard. I have heard of one of their dogs pulling the handler down an entire flight of stairs. I talked with one woman who got a dog from there and is having numerous problems. Her dog has medical issues and it wasn't certain that Noah's Assistance Dogs was going to help her, even though they placed the dog knowing of the health issues. If she elected to get another dog she would have to wait two years. The dogs also cost $1500. There is no dormitory, you have to stay in a hotel and pay for that and your meals during training. I have no idea about follow up.

May I ask where you're from? Because my mom lives about 45 min away from Crete, too. And thanks a lot for the information, it really seems like I'm better off contacting GDA (which is near my dad's) or another school. That's horrible about your friend.

I'm in York. I hope you find the right place to get your next guide. I think it's more difficult than picking a college! *smile*

I know- I've been researching like crazy the last couple of days, and it really is a hard decision to make.
