Was Robotech white washed? Well given that it was developed for American audiences (mostly based on Macross but not entirely), I don’t know if I’d use that term. As a kid I saw it differently. I didn’t see the characters for race but for their humanity as they mostly banded together to try and survive the alien onslaught.

Interestingly enough, they did keep a lot of mention of racial differences (both directly and symbolically) while making it seem like that was the norm for society. Like Claudia and Roy… I thought nothing of it, a black woman and a “white” male being a couple. I wasn’t old enough then to realize that a LOT of people do have problems with that. But compared to all the human-alien romances that ran through the course of the series, it really wasn’t a big deal. They also kept Lin Minmei and Lin Kyle Chinese (though I believe they spelled it Lynn) as the names were actually presented in the correct order.
