In my quest to the core of the Arthurian lore (<- now that's what I call alliteration!), I decided to start from one of the first films. I had already done it without the screencaps, but then it seemed like a waste not to insert them. :) Many thanks to
screencap_me, your resources were indispensable!

Thank you for sharing! It is fun indeed :-). And kind of Disney to refer to Uther Pendragon as 'the good king' ;P.
It's not so odd that the sword in the stone is not named. Some versions of the Arthur story say that the sword in the stone is not Excalibur. In those stories, the sword from the stone breaks in battle at one point, and that is when Merlin takes Arthur to the lake to receive Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake.
Personally, I like that version. Arthur needs the sword in the stone to prove he is Uther's son, but then he gets his own magical sword to prove he is a better king than his father :).

I think I found it odd because I would have thought that they'd jump at the opportunity to include that too... but maybe Mr. White had something to say about it? I'm biased on the subject by Valerio Massimo Manfredi's novel, The Last Legion (the film is on my to-do list for a future picspam :P)... It is all rather impromptu how the sword came to be in the stone and how it got the name.
Shall I spoil you? I was going to, but I stopped in time. :)
Your version is appealing for the very reason you stated. And it makes for a clever plot device, to get rid of Uther's influence on Arthur I mean.
