A Book Review. Sort of.

I just finished a book called Where Are You Now? by Mary Higgins Clark. It is a tale of missing persons, mystery and suspense, which started all right, but less than halfway through it began to try my patience. The point of view changed quite often, which is usually not a good method of storytelling, but not necessarily a drawback. Yet the author ( Read more... )

Haven't read anything by her... is she the author of the Alphabet Murders or is that someone else? Funny the things that make us want to stop reading. I hate it when the author writes something along the lines... 'He would come to regret this decision blah blah blah'. *No* don't tell me what's going to happen three chapters on... why do I need to keep on reading this trash now????

Do you mean the "Kinsey Milhone" series of mysteries based on A-to-Z titles, by Sue Grafton? They're very good, although she's running out of letters. I think she's at 'X' now!

But getting back to Mary Higgins Clark, when I looked up a list of her novels, I couldn't remember having read any of her other books, although I've seen her name a lot. I guess she's one of those writers who are famous for being famous. She's prolific, at least.

You're right: we all have things that will put us off a book, and sometimes just a turn of phrase, or a botched attempt at foreshadowing is enough to ruin it for us. That's one of the things that make writing such a tough job: too many pitfalls. But I guess it's like acting: it will break your heart, so don't attempt to live that life unless something inside compels you.

Yes... Sue Grafton... that be she! Old age... can't remember a thing. *Sigh* I must try some of hers at some stage.

I think I may have mixed her up with MHC because they're both prolific. I see loads of books by both in charity shops here.

Tough job indeed. I couldn't write on a professional level. The deadlines would kill me and I think I would be very prone having my heart broken over critcism.
