I don't know if anyone else cares about this, but this article expresses a lot of the feelings I have about Japan. And it comforts me that it was written by a Japanese.

Actually, I don't know a lot about Japan at all, but that article makes a lot of sense and I think it was very well written and positioned...I hope there are more people sympathetic to the writer's view. In my opinion, nationalism can be a great thing when establishing one's identity, but Japan seems like it had an identity long ago and then lost it.

If you're at all interested in the subject, read Shutting out the Sun. It goes further in depth, specifically into the subject of hikikomori, as well as other issues. Although I think the book may be a bit overly negative, it also seems to be pretty grounded in reality.

That sounds like an interesting read, definitely next on my list. Thanks for the suggestion! Are there any books on Japanese history that you would recommend as well?
