Retailing Era Closes With Music MegastoreI remember going to the Times Square Virgin Megastore many times when I was a young teenager and being overwhelmed each time. It was three stories of ecstacy - computer games, books, graphic novels, CDs, DVDs, European and Asian magazines, and just random fun crap. They always had stuff you couldn't find ( Read more... )

So do you buy music online?
We had a big and cool Tower Records here in town and we went there alot and browsed. Then got continually upset at prices and decided it was cool, but we can get more online delivered to our front door and not pay tax on it from the internet. Then Itunes happened and good lords, why go to a store and deal with drunk people outside ever again? Its kind of sad and when I hear of cool places like this closing it kind of makes me wonder "did I indirectly help this happen?"

Of course I buy music online. :) I feel like you guys... why buy an overpriced CD when I can buy it online, buying only the songs I want, and not have to schlep an annoying CD around with me?

I'm sure we all helped it happen... which means it's not such a bad thing. Sure, it was fun to walk around in there still, but it's not a non-profit organization. They weren't making money and had become a dinosaur.

It's funny how I still go to Tower Records here in Japan and it seems absolutely fine (ie, it is ALWAYS full of people whenever I go in) despite that CDs cost like twice as much here as they do in the US. Not sure why that is or how the recording industry is doing in general here, though... but the quote in that article about the store being a meeting place that is disappearing is quite true.

It struck me that Japanese people have more of a tendency to be collectors... what do you think?

Yes and no. They don't really have SPACE to collect a ton of stuff, which is why used bookstores/CD stores are so popular and always full of stuff.... but also why the stuff in the used stores is always in such good condition?
