Oh, and...what saddens me the most is that the federal government has turned a blind eye to the various states' endeavors to allow their residents to actually VOTE ON HUMAN RIGHTS. These rights should be inherently laid down in our Constitution, and they shouldn't be up for a public vote. Because what happens when you let Democracy run its course? The majority rules, and the majority of people are inevitably those who are privileged, whilst the marginalized minorities are left unfairly represented.
That's the thing. Does the separation of church and state somehow overlook the fact that members of the government still make legal decisions based on religious values?
The entire issue just makes me ANGRY, and I know it isn't very mature, but there was "rousing applause from opponents of the measure" and I just want to SLAP those people.
"There are many who believe that this bill will change our entire culture."
Yeah? Well maybe it would be a GOOD change. Augh. I don't even have anything intelligent to say on the matter right now. It's just horribly, horribly frustrating. >.>
Yeah, I bolded the stuff I thought was alternately important and/or horrifying. I sympathize with you on wanting to slap people. How can you applaud because you've just kept people from a basic human right? How does that make you smile?
It's not going to change the culture like they fear it will, in my opinion. They just don't like the idea of any major change like this.
That was my interpretation. I don't understand it at all. It's just horrifying, and those people don't seem to work under any sense of logic. If you try and compare what they're doing to, say, the deprivation of certain other BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS they get all up in a huff about how it's ~different.~ Well then tell me HOW it's different, with actual coherent thought and valid examples, instead of saying the same empty words a million times. It's why I can't even talk to those people. It's not worth trying to debate. It's walking in circles, and there are definitely better ways I can spend my time -- ways that might make a difference to this issue that I really do care and feel strongly about.
I'm of the same opinion. I'll admit that there WILL be change, this sort of thing always causes change. But not crazy world-ending, moral-corrupting change like they seem to be envisioning. And the arguments about the "slippery slope" and marrying your pets and just... This doesn't make sense. Is that the best argument you can come up with?
That "it's different" just means "I'm uncomfortable with that" from what I can tell.
And I mean, if it's causing this much of an uproar to get gay marriage legalized, imagine what would happen if any of the items on that slippery slope came to the lawmakers. In all honestly, I'm for consenting adults being able to marry more than one other person, although I guess there's potential for messiness there. Then again, there's potential for messiness whenever love and law get mixed together.
There is something different about Christians in this country. I don't know why. I'm sure some academic could explain it to us, but that would still probably not make me feel better about the situation.
