HISTORY;
Childhood -
Alice Hammond was born in Corrie on Arran Island, Scotland, on 15 June 1955. Her parents were both fishing people, trading in grindlylows and (very occasionally) kelpies. It was a modest living, forcing her parents to be away much of the year, except in the winter months. Most of her childhood was instead spent with her uncle, Algie, who traded in less-marketable hinkypunks. However in 1965, when Alice was ten years old, there were some skirmishes between the fishermen and Merpeople, both of whom were claiming the other was hunting in their territory. In one such skirmish there were fatalities, including Alice's mother.
Where before she had been a very happy, extroverted child, she became much more closed and introverted. Her father came home that winter and started a joint venture on hinkypunks with his brother Algie. He soon became famous on the island for being a drunk. This caused Alice to commit some underage witchcraft in a fight with some of the local muggle children for being cruel about her father. She received a written letter of warning from the Ministry, causing the men to keep her at home more. She developed a strong nurturing ability as well as tough love through this, while she and Algie nursed her father back to something like his old self.
Hogwarts -
In 1966 Alice went to Hogwarts, where she met Frank on her third day. He had noticed she wasn't really talking to any of the girls or boys in her house, and despite being two years older, came to ask her to join them. Through Frank and several of the friends she developed, Alice became more like the child she once was. However, now it was joined with a deeper empathy, fuller compassion, and stronger protective instincts.
Frank left Hogwarts to train as an Auror in Alice's sixth year. They kept up with owls at first, but after awhile the correspondence trailed off. Alice dated a little here and there throughout the rest of her time at Hogwarts, but mostly kept that part of herself to herself.
After her OWLs, Alice chose to train as a Healer, knowing that there was a shortage thanks to a spate of Death Eater attacks on Healers. After achieving high grades in her NEWTs, she trained at St. Mungos in London in August 1973.
Currently -
It was there she saw Frank again, after he had a bad run-in with some Death Eaters. A week after Frank was out, they had their first date. They were married on 10 April 1974, despite Augusta's disapproval of Alice's family and lack of money.
Alice had wanted a baby as long as she could remember, but hadn't considered the consequences of the current political climate. In early September 1974, Alice suffered a miscarriage when the baby was four months along. This was her darkest hour. When she had discovered she was pregnant, the protective instincts had began to tell her to move to the Auror office. She struggled with the decision, not sure if it would be wise for a child to have two parents in the business of war. But as the patient number increased and severity of the injuries escalated, Alice knew there was no other job. She was in just as much danger being on-call at St. Mungo’s casualty ward, and she knew she could contribute significantly as a fighter. As Aurors and Healers have the same requirements, she was allowed to begin training in 1975.
At first her fellow Aurors were not sure of her abilities. Clearly Alice was an asset for the office - she was trained as a Healer, her reputation as a listener made her the office therapist, and she took directions well. But the sweetness that settles at the top of her nature made others question if she was able to carry out the duties of an Auror. However, Alice is a strong believer in peace. She wants and wanted to see stability returned to her world, for her and her children’s future. But her vision of peace was and is as twisted by the war as anyone elses’, and she started making questionable judgment calls. While no Auror has stepped forward to report her behaviour, it is well known that she will strike preemptively and use the Unforgivable Curses freely.
Personality;
Alice is a very good person. On the surface, she is bright and always trying to lighten people’s moods. Her smile is her trademark, thanks to a rather deep-seated set of dimples, along with her empathy and kindness.
In the Order and in the Auror office, Alice is known for being a great listener. She is insightful and understanding with everyone. But she tends to absorb other people's problems - she wants to fix them but she also feels them acutely. Her empathy is much needed and even useful at the office, with the Order, and at home, as it helps others cope.
Very few people get to see the whole of Alice. At work and in the Order there are only two Alices: The sweet, gentle friend and the efficient, brutal fighter. And while always willing to help others, Alice is quite reticent to allow others to do the same for her. She does not talk about her own problems or worries, and instead retreats inward. After her miscarriage this overpowered her, and even Frank could not reach her. Alice shut down temporarily and went home to Corrie for two weeks until her resolve threw her out of her self-pity. She stands by her resolutions - once her mind is made up, Alice does not change or waver.
Alice also pressures herself. She is very afraid of the wars effect on herself, her family, and others she loves. After her work in St. Mungo’s, she knows what evil truly is and is terrified of its implications for her family. But she concluded that hiding them away from war would help no one, not when she and Frank had the ability to help. She has also compensated with some brutal actions as an Auror, giving her an unofficial reputation that some respect and some fear.
Though Alice doesn’t see it, she holds people to the standard of being as giving, strong, and smart as she is, but (as long as the person is on the “good side”) almost never blames people for what she views as their “shortcomings”. Her empathy makes allowances for them - sometimes to a real fault. There are few traits she cannot or will not forgive. Before Voldemort, Alice thought betrayal, murder, and hate were beyond this capacity. But war changed what she believed those to be, and she now blurs the lines for those caught in the fight.
Mentality;
Alice is, overall, stable. She functions well and has good social graces. While her aforementioned emotionality is sometimes a problem, very few people ever see it. Only Frank, her father, and her uncle have seen her at her worst, which was right after her miscarriage.
When she first started as gaining her notoriety, few people expressed their worry for her. Only Dumbledore talked to her and Frank about their fieldwork behaviour, asking if they felt their results justified their actions. But they believe that their actions are saving more lives than they are taking, their resolve is strong, and they trust each other’s judgment.
Alice's IQ is high, she was the top of her Gryffindor class at Hogwarts almost every year, but still came behind a few Ravenclaws.
Physical;
With an average height and frame, Alice has always been just on the bigger side of thin. However, with the birth of Neville, she has gained and retained some weight. While still fit, she carries extra weight in her hips and chest.
Her pain tolerance increased infinitely after childbirth. Alice was never one to be whingy, but after childbirth, she could withstand much more pain than before. After accidentally slicing her hand with the kitchen knife, she winced, said some obligatory rather than necessary curses, then fixed herself up with her home medical kit.
Magical;
Alice’s grades in Herbology, Transfiguration, Defence Against the Dark Arts, and Charms were always solid. However, she struggled with Potions and later regretted ever taking Arithmancy.

Political;
Alice believes that the world could be kind and good, that it could have peace. But she knows that that is not the world she lives in now. This strong belief in stability led her to join the Auror office. When she first had the idea, she wasn't sure. She didn't know if she believed in fighting for peace. But when she miscarried and St. Mungo's was suddenly having an all-time record high number of muggle and magical patients, Alice realised there was nothing worth more in this world than stability. And if she wasn't going to try, she didn't deserve it - even if trying meant war.
When Alice first started getting assignments in the field, she could feel the others did not trust her. But it didn’t matter. That first assignment, she efficiently committed her first Unforgivable Curse (outside of training) without provocation or proof that the person marked was their assignment. From that point on she gained her respect in and outside of the Ministry.
In her own words...
I knew my life would change when I got pregnant, but I really didn't know how much. And when I lost the baby, I was numb. Two lives were taken from me that day - the future Frank and I were planning and the child’s. But I couldn’t feel it, I wanted to, but I couldn’t. It wasn't until my father sat me down and talked to me about how much I was reminding him of what I was like when Mum died that I saw what was happening.
I had to go home to Corrie, while I sorted myself out. I think I lay in bed for five days before I felt started to think again. Things fell back into place, I got over most of it. And then Neville came, and for a month, everything was beautiful to me. He was so small and sweet, with my face and Frank’s eyes. But now I’m trapped. I can only protect Neville by supporting Frank. I’m not out there, working and doing and it makes me so afraid. I hate how afraid I am. I'm always scared that it's not enough, that there's more to be done, and most of all, I'm scared I'll lose myself in this war. I don't care if I lose my body, but I have watched the victims of the Death Eaters at St. Mungo's, and they are not trying to save their lives anymore, they're trying to save their souls. Out of everything I want in this war, I want to either survive with dignity or die with honor. I would rather die than become what I saw there, and sometimes I think the same about my family.

*Alice stares out the window as Frank leaves the house for his assignment. It’s almost midnight, the village of Virginia Water is completely dark. A fog is rising up from the lake, everything is cold and quiet. The night almost feels heavy.
After he reaches the gate, Frank turns to see her, gives her a look that’s something between a grimace and a smile, and Disapparates.
Alice stands by the window, fidgeting. Neville is asleep - there’s nothing to do. She almost wishes Neville would start crying, at least then she’d be occupied. She turns, and walks up the stairs to their bedroom.
Now there’s only waiting.
She shuts the door magically, then looks around the room like she’s never been in it before. Her mind feels like it’s moving faster than her thoughts. Slowly she turns to the closet and takes down her nightgown from the hanger. As she undresses, she looks down at her motherly body. It’s so much heavier than it used to be; try as she might, she can’t get rid of the stupid bulk between her chest and pelvis. How can she go back in the field with all that?
She shuts the closet door and leans against it, letting her head loll back. Much as she hates to admit it, that’s what it all boils down to. She’s nervous for her husband, but Frank is one of the best in the office, he’ll probably become department Head in about twenty years.
No, she thinks, as she gets into bed and puts her wand on the nightstand, she’s anxious because he’s the one going out and she’s not. It’s been over half a year, and Alice is still on maternity leave.
Alice winces and looks at the door that divides her room from Neville’s. Much as she loves being a mother, she wants to feel like she’s actively protecting him too. After the first two months she felt ready to go back, but Frank and she had decided before he was born that they would wait he was at least a year before Alice went back.
Alice looks down at her wand, itching to use it for something other than cooking or cleaning or diaper changing. She is not a domestic creature. She sighs. Slowly she gets up, folding her arms under her heavy breasts and goes into Neville’s room. His little breath is barely audible, but Alice always feels like she could hear it at the Quidditch World Cup. Gently she lifts him out of the crib and strokes his head. His hair is finally coming in, and it looks like he’s taking after her. She carries him back into her room, softly singing.
She settles back against the pillows and lays Neville against her chest. His breath changes for a moment as he snuggles against her chest. Alice feels her face pull the same half-grimace, half-smile that Frank’s did earlier and closes her eyes.*
We’ll just wait together then.
