"Uh-huh," Dani turned the page of the newspaper. She'd been waiting for Puryer's call for a month now but there's been nothing since Puryer contacted her. Dani was starting to get antsy for some news, any news. So, when her phone rang early in the morning Dani'd rushed to answer her phone expecting it to be some cryptic call from Puryer but instead got Ted. Ted who seemed determined to update her on the status of her finances. Crews' finances.
Since she answered the phone she barely got a word in, since she figured she at least owed him for something Dani settled on the counter and pretended to listen to Ted yammering on about stocks, funds and other things that Dani really didn't care about. She stopped listening when he started talking about return of investments.
She owed the guy, yeah, but he was also the reason why Dani was in Fandom in the first place. Dani turned another page. "That's good, Ted."
"You're not listening to me, are you?"
"Not really," she admitted.
"But this-- this is your money!" Ted sounded like she told him the world was really flat or something equally outrages and outdated.
"Ted."
"Yes?"
"Was Crews ever interested when you updated him about his money?"
There was a brief silence then, "Well, he'd eat his fruit, nod his head and say, 'That's a great job, Ted! Keep it up!'"
Dani reached for her coffee and sipped then she placed the cup back on the counter. "You want me to say that too, don't you?"
"What... No, I--"
"Ted."
"Yes?"
"You're doing a great job, keep it up."
There was another silence, she could hear him shuffle as he stammered out several words before settling with an embarrassed, "Thanks."
Dani chuckled. She could see why Crews kept him around. "Hey, do me a favor, I need a car--"
"Oh, you want me to ship your car there?"
Dani thought of her hatchback then the streets of Fandom, which were far too narrow. "Yeah, but listen, maybe you can ship it to a garage, this island's too--"
"Which car do you want me to ship the Maserati or the Grand National?"
"--small. Wait, what?"
"I asked if you wanted me to ship the Maserati or the Grand National."
"Those are Crews's cars not mine," she said in a rare moment of Not Getting It.
"Detective," Ted said, sounding amused, "the money isn't the only thing you inherited from Charlie."
Dani opened her mouth to say something, realized she didn't know what to say and closed it again.
"Detective Reese? Dani?" Dani still couldn't speak. "Oh, did you want me to send your Toyota--"
"No!" she said quickly. She remembered how the Maserati handled as it cruised through the Freeway with Crews sulking beside her. Dani realized she was grinning from ear-to-ear.
"Detective?"
"No," she repeated in a calmer tone. "Send the Maserati."
The streets of Fandom was too narrow to accommodate a car but Maryland can handle a Maserati Quattroporte just fine.
