"Hey," I say. It comes out sounding a lot more like a plea than a greeting so I clear my throat with a cough.

"You wanna... talk?" I ask, hesitating because I've had little practice delivering the line 'we need to talk.' I hope he doesn't resist, but I'll try another tactic if he does.
